Honey

Honey

By Melissa Ann Hardin

This is my story of my one-week vacation in July. I’m telling my twin sister and friends what happened to me after I ran away from home one night. Would you like to hear the story too? Okay good. My name is Honey, and this is my story. We are having tea and biscuits at the table together, pull up a chair and I’ll tell you more. Here is a cup. Would you like a biscuit? No? Okay. Dogs usually like them more than humans do.

So, one fourth of July, I heard the loudest noises I’d ever heard before in my life and I am five years old or so they say. I watched as colors sparkled in the sky above. I laid down and tried to cover my ears, my humans only clapped their paws in happiness as each color joined the sky. But I was scared and so I wandered away from my twin sister and boyfriend and ran through the dark to get away from the noise. I soon stopped after I became tired and hid myself in the darkness of the trees. I was alone and I had no idea where I was. I had no idea where home was and so I decided to be brave and keep walking. Soon I came to a castle high on a hill. It was quiet there and no one bothered me. I wandered alone until I decided to lay down for the night. When the sun came up I got to visit with some of the visitors to the castle. I tried to be friendly and explain to them I was lost, but no human speaks dog very well, and they didn’t understand. I got lots of pats, but no one knew where my humans were. The day grew warmer, and I was very thirsty. I was hungry too, but my bowl was very far away. I was outside at the castle for three days before a nice lady came to check on me. She called to me, called me Honey, and gave me some water in a cup, just like a human. She was very nice, but I am very shy, and she was a stranger. It is a good thing I have good manners and so did she. She went back inside the castle and we kept looking at each other through the window. I visited with other humans who wanted to see if I was lost but soon everyone left as the day wore on. Soon the lady came outside and drove her vroom next to me. She talked to me and patted my head and told me she’d help me. I didn’t have a tag to tell her who my humans were so I could go home. So I left with her to go to her home until we could find my humans. I got to ride in the backseat of her vroom until we got to her house and she let me out where their was so much green grass to see. I saw moos and other dogs. There were other humans and a very small one I made friends with immediately. Then we went inside. She gave me food and water. This was the best part. I was on vacation. At home I stayed outside, but on vacation I could stay inside in air conditioning and eat what the nice lady called bratwurst. I got to eat as much as I liked. It was very quiet, and the lady was sweet to me. There was a cat who lived there named Shakespeare. He didn’t seem to like me much at first and I tried to tell him I was only on vacation. His mom told him I was a guest who needed their help, which was the truth. He spatted and stomped a little at having a guest. Such a silly kitty. I guess he wasn’t used to sharing his mom with guests. The nice lady told me she’d help me find my human again, and she made sure I was comfortable, and we all soon laid down to sleep for the night. I had my very own chair to sleep in. It rocked a little and I think we were all a little worried, but I was a good girl, and I gave the lady not even one problem. I never even barked, not even once. The lady was impressed.

One day passed, then two. I was having a wonderful vacation. I ate as much as I wanted, had more than enough to drink. I slept a lot. The lady let me go in and out of the house as much as I liked, so long as I listened and didn’t go too far away. I can listen very well. I can sit, stay, and shake hands. I never bark or scare anyone, and my humans love me very much to teach me good manners. The third day came and I began to miss my humans and my sister, who by the way, looks just like I do. I mean identical. I began to pout and huff like Shakespeare. I worried. What was my sister doing right now? Were her and my boyfriend playing games without me? Did she take my toy and bowl since I’ve been gone? Hmm I hoped not. I hope they all missed me too. The morning of the fourth day I was on vacation at the lady’s house, she went to work but came back very soon. Good news! Good news! She found my lost humans!!! So I said goodbye to Shakespeare and thanked him for sharing his house with me for my vacation. He still looked grumpy and honestly I’ve never seen a cat pout so long at having a guest. The nice lady put me in her vroom and drove me to my home. I was so excited I jumped over her shoulder to get out of the vroom when I saw one of my lost humans and my sister and my boyfriend again! My human and I thanked the nice lady, and she drove away in her vroom. I had such a wonderful vacation that I forgot all about the fact that I didn’t mean to take one at all. I was lucky because not all strangers are nice or safe to spend time with, but that’s my story. I think everyone needs a nice vacation sometimes to remember how nice it is to be home. So, I hope you liked my story. Bye! Sincerely, Honey and Melissa Ann. July 11th, 2023.
