One sunny afternoon Secret Agent Orange was curled up fast asleep for a nap when a loud Bang! could be heard followed by Mom squealing. Secret Agent Grey quickly jumped to his feet. Noticing that his brother Secret Agent Orange was not feeling well from their FIV he gave him a quick nudge.

“I’ll go check it out while you get some rest.” Secret Agent Grey said.

“Okay, let me know if you need some help.” Secret Agent Orange said.

Paw 14, 2013, After Lunch Nap.

I woke up one sunny afternoon and looked about the house. I was napping in the sunshine one minute, and in the next minute I was awakened by a loud BANG! I also heard mom squealing as I opened one eye. I was sure I heard something for why else would I jolt wide awake like that? I checked in with Secret Agent Orange to see if he had heard but he wasn’t feeling well from FIV so I told him I would check it out. Nothing seemed wrong but I continued to search, everything was quiet, so I thought maybe I’d find a new place to nap that wasn’t quite so hot.

I started in the living room. Brother was sitting on the couch, talking to himself it seemed, as I didn’t see anyone else in the room. I got up and stretched each muscle as only a cat can do, and I jumped quickly from the top of Fort Secret to the coffee table two feet below. I crossed quickly to the couch beside my brother and curled up on the side of his leg. It was warm in the sunshine when I was sleeping but I felt cold now that I had moved out of the sun and into the dark.

I snuggled but he moved a lot, and he was loud! I tried quietly moving onto his lap, sneaking below the black “controller” thing Brother held in his hand. I batted at the noisy thing next to his mouth and checked around his ears to check and see if maybe that was where the Bang came from. Then I flattened my body out over his legs and I was just getting snuggly when my brother yelled out

“WATCH OUT FOR THE DRAGON!”

His body rose into the air and down I began to fall. I landed on my feet perfectly. I immediately ran below the coffee table so the dragon could not see me. It roared on the noise maker and then it was gone. My brother must have scared him off because when I peeked out, I didn’t see any dragon in the room. He was talking to himself, or me, again though and very loudly telling himself all about how he defeated the dragon! I hung on every word. He must surely be the bravest brother who ever lived. But he was very loud, and I was very tired after all the excitement. No, his lap just would not do at the moment. I decided to go somewhere else to finish my nap and see what Sister was doing.

So, I got up and traveled down the hallway to see my sister. As I walked into her room, I sniffed the air. The air normally smelled like roses around her but not today, not now, at this particular moment. She was using the stinky goo to make her paw nails look pretty. It smells awful but her lap looked free. She was sitting at her vanity and I jumped up. She jumped and down came the pink stuff dripping from the bottle onto the wood of the table.

“Oh No!” Sister cried.

I stayed where I was balancing from leg to leg. She awkwardly tried to clean up the stinky goo before it could dry. She used puffy stuff between her paw toes to keep her pink paw nails from touching one another and messing up the stinky goo. Her nails were shiny, and my fur got stuck to where I rubbed my cheek against them. I love her so much I just had to show her right now! I rubbed on each side, and she cried out “No!” but then she giggled. Her nails were covered in my fur. She stretched out her legs and I sat on her lap looking at her in the mirror. When I looked at myself, I saw two pink streaks, one on each side of my face.

Sister laughed loudly and said

“Now you have make-up on! You look like you are wearing blush!” I thought I looked pretty and gave her another rub.

She giggled and said “Well at least my toenails are still okay. I’ll just help them dry and then I’ll start again on my fingernails.”

She grabbed a little pink box from her table and placed it on the floor. She called it a dryer, but when she stuck her toes in the creature began to roar! I sprang quickly from her lap.

“Run, Sister!” I cried. “Before it eats your paws!”

For this must be the very same dragon making loud bangs, that Brother had so bravely frightened away moments before. Sister had mistaken it for a dryer thing and now it was angry and would surely eat us! I jumped from her lap to the floor, to the bed, to the chair and then to the dresser in hopes of getting safely away from the dragon. Nothing chased me I realized suddenly, so I stopped and looked around.

Sister sat in her chair laughing at the dragon and it seemed to be working because the dragon was not biting her and was letting her use the heat from its mouth to dry her paw nails. I stared at her in wonder as she tamed the beast. I must surely have the most clever sister in the whole world. For she tamed the dragon to help her, not harm her. She so was so pretty, sweet and smart that even dragons loved her I thought! The dragon roared loudly though and was much too scary for me. Her lap was no safe place to finish my nap!

I leapt down and ran out of the open door to Mom’s room, where the air smelled like fruit. Mom was sitting at the open window staring out. Warm sunshine on her lap and I jumped there.

“Been out for an adventure baby? What’s on your face?”

I yowled loudly as I told her all about the sunshine, my nap, Brother, THE DRAGON! Sister, THE DRAGON! She listened quietly as she smoothed my ruffled fur back down. That felt nice I decided. Mom always knew just how to calm me. She wiped me with a wet thing on my cheek that smelled but took off the pink blush. It pulled my fur and I complained and said stop, and mom said “Sit still.” and rubbed until my fur was clean.

We went to sit back down at the window. Mom brushed my fur and held me as she sang a quiet song about a birdy, she would buy just for me. I stood to get in a better spot. Will this lap do?

“Hmmm” Mom said as I tiptoed on her lap.

No…Yes…Well maybe not…move tail to balance to the right…. Oh, oh, oh steady…and yes, there we go. Now, just hold still Mom and I’ll settle down in a second, I promise. There would be no dragon near my mom after all. I just need to make this softer. What do you mean OW?! I thought we agreed before that claw were okay on denim, just not the silk?? Alright then, I’m just going to curl up here then, ok? Right here…in this comfy warm lap of moms.

Goodnight Mom, your lap is just right! Zzzzz…

The End!

Case Closed.

Sincerely, Melissa Ann
