Gaurdian Angels

Here are some more guarding angel stories. After the success of my last story of guarding angel stories I have decided to do one more.

The first story comes from and E-mail I got a long time ago. A man was talking about his son who has learning problems. The man said “He and his son were walking past a park where some boys they boy knew were playing baseball. The boy asked “Do you think they will let me play?” The father knew most boys would not want him on their team. The father also understood what a boost it would be for his son if he could play.

The boy's father came up to one of the boys on the field and asked if his son could play. The boy looked around for help but got none from his teammates. The boy made up his own mind. And said “We are losing by 6 runs and it is the eighth inning. I guess he can be one our team and we will try and put him up to bat in the ninth inning.” His team scored 2 runs but were still down by 3.

At the top of the ninth The boy put on a glove and went out to the outfield. Although no hits came his way he was grinning from ear to ear. He really had a good time out there.

At the bottom of the ninth his team scored again.. Now there were 2 outs and bases loaded. The boy was scheduled to bat. The tying run was on first base. Would they let him bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly he was given the bat. Everyone knew it was all but impossible because he didn't even know how to hold the bat right, much less connect with the ball. However as he stepped into the batter's box the pitcher moved up a few step to lob the ball softly so he could at least be able to make contact with the ball. The first pitch came and he swung clumsily and missed.

The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards the boy. He swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball back to the pitcher. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown him out. Ending the game.

Instead the pitcher took the ball and threw in high over the first baseman's head and into right field. Everyone started yelling, “RUN, RUN TO FIRST BASE.” Never in his life had he ever made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide eyed and startled. Everyone yelled “RUN TO SECOND!”

By the time he was rounding first base, the right fielder had the ball. He could have thrown the ball to second for the tag. But he understood what the pitcher was doing so he threw the ball way over the third baseman's head. He ran toward seconds as the runners a head of him were running for home, very excited.

As he reached second, the opposing shortstop ran to him, turned him towards third and shorted “RUN TO THIRD!” As he rounded third the boys from both teams were screaming, “Run, Run home!” he ran home and stepped on home plate and was cheered as the hero, for hitting a “Grand Slam” and winning the game for his team.”

That day they were many guardian angels on that baseball field and they did something for the boy I am sure he never forgot. Those boys did more for the boy that day then they could ever know.

One day when I was about 11 or 12 years old I got a new bike. It wasn't new but it was new to me. It had 3 speed and I thought I was hot stuff. Now I had a big bike. The first day I got it I took it for a long ride. I rode down in the canyon where we used to play a lot. When you got down to the bottom of the canyon there were 2 ways you could go. We always went left and I knew that area pretty well. This time I decide to be different so I went right through a part of the canyon I had never seen. When I got to the end of the canyon I was a little ways out of town. I knew the road I went to, but got turned around and didn't know which way to go. So I rode this way and that trying to see something I recognized. I ended up way out of town near the river bed. I turned down this small road (it was only a block long) there was a man standing near the edge of the road I asked him how to get home and he told me. I followed his instructions and when I back to the grocery store a few blocks from home I went in and washed my face so no one would know I had been crying, then rode the rest of the way home.

I have a sister who is a quad. She is kind of a strange quad because she has some use of her hands and arms. She has one pair of scissors she loves because it fits hers hand so well. She is able to use them with a minimum of trouble. One day she was doing some cutting with the scissors and dropped them. She looked everywhere for them, even asked a neighbor to help her look in her wheelchair, but no luck. She made a delivery to friends down the street. She checked the sidewalk all the way home, but no scissors. When her husband got home he helped her look, no scissors.

The next morning she was praying to God about the scissors. Asking what she should do. When she got up she went into her office and there were her scissors on the keyboard. She asked her husband about them but he had no idea how they got there. All she could say was “Thank you God, Thank you God.” She writes stories. This is part of one of her stories .

Guarding angels don't always have to be human. I live in a small mobile home on my sister's property. Last year I fell in some gravel and cut my forehead I had to have several stitches in my forehead. When my sister and her husband are gone that dog would visit me. He saw me fall and stayed right by my side until my brother-in-law got home. A couple of days later I was walking around the same way I did when I tripped and fell. Buddy ran ahead and he laid on the pipe I tripped on so I could not possibly fall on it again.

Many years ago when I was in the USAF I was stationed in Labrador, Canada for a year. There wasn't a whole lot to do so I read my Bible from Genesis to Revelations. As I did, God told me to mark different passages. So I did. When I was being discharged God told me to carry the Bible so I did. After my discharge I went to Boston, Montreal, back to Boston and I wanted to go to Disney World before I came back to California. When I bought my bus ticket I bought a ticket to Miami Beach instead. I have no idea why I said Miami Beach except it was what what God wanted me to do. When I got to Miami it was about midnight and no buses out until around 7:00 am. I tried to find a hotel room but they were all filled. Let me tell you don't ever spend a night in the Miami bus depot if you can avoid it.

The next day I got on a bus to Disney World and about an hour out of Miami a girl about 20 saw my Bible and asked if she could borrow it. So I gave it to her. I looked back once and she was reading it with a boy about here age. A little bit later she brought the Bible back to me. I said keep it. It is for you.

So she said thank you and walked back to her seat.

Hollywood sometimes has some good stories about guardian angels. Here are two I especially like.

The first is an old Waltons episode.

Mary Ellen's small boy get's lost on Walton's Mountain. Everyone is looking for him. Finally he comes walking out of the mountains by himself. They ask him what happen he said he got lost and an old man found him. The old man showed him the way back. They could not find any trace of the man the boy was talking about. Towards the end of the show the boy is looking at pictures in the house and starts shouting “Mama that's my friend, that's my friend”. Mary Ellen looks at the picture is was a picture of Grandpa Walton. (Will Geer played Grandpa Walton on the show. When he died suddenly in real life they killed off Grandpa Walton too. This was a tribute to Will Geer). No one could understand how the boy could have seen Grandpa Walton on the Mountain but they believed it.

Little House on the Prairie did a special 2 hour episode once. The Ingalls had a baby boy. The boy was sick and did not live very long. Laura prayed one night for the boy to died so she could get back some of her parents attention. After the baby died. Laura felt terrible and asked God to take her life and bring her brother back. When God didn't answer the way she wanted she figured God couldn't hear her. So she decided to get as close to God as she could. So she ran away and climbed the highest mountain she could find, to get closer to God. When she got to the top there was a hermit living there. I think his name was Jonathan. (Jonathan was played by Ernest Borgnine). He took care of Laura and even made a cross for her with her name on it. He tied a string on it so she could wear it around her neck. Then he told her to wash up for dinner. When she did, the cross fell off and went down the river. Laura was upset. He said don't worry about it I will make you another.

Meanwhile Charles Ingalls and his friend Mr. Edwards were out searching for Laura. The came to a river and didn't know which way to go. Charles found the cross in some weeds where it got stuck. It was pointing up stream so that was the way they went. When Laura saw them coming she said “No Pa you can't come yet”. Jonathan said “Child this is what God wants don't fight it”.

When Charles and Mr. Edwards got up to Laura. There was a lot of hugging and crying. Then Laura turned to introduce her friend and he was gone.

This episode was one of the most talked about episodes in our family. It was more talked about then any episode on any show that I can think of. It touched many of my family members and I am sure it touched many many people across the country.

Two items from the recent news.

A six year old boy was playing with a friend at Indiana Dune National Lakeshore Park. He was suddenly sucked into a sand dune. His friend went to get the fathers when the fathers got there they started digging with their hands. It was all they had. They could hear the boy but could not see him. More people came, some brought shovels, finally a back hoe came. It took about 4 hours but they got him out. He was in a hospital for two weeks. They said his worse problem was the fact he had sand in his lungs. Doctors got out what they could. They said it would take about 6 months to get the rest out. He is home now and expected to be fine.

There were a lot of guardian angels there that day. The park has been closed until until everyone is sure it is safe.

The second story is about a 12 year old boy home alone. He heard widows breaking and knew someone was breaking in. He got the phone and hid in a bedroom closet. He called 911 and they sent help and arrested two men as they were trying to leave the house. The boy said he was very scared. The 911 operator kept talking to him and telling him what a good job he was doing. When it was over he said he did the only thing he could think to do. It turned out to be the right thing.

I want to congratulate that 911 operator on a job well done. Those 911 operators do one heck of a job and receive very little credit.

Robin Elizabeth Rogers was born on August 26 1950. When she was born she had downs syndrome. She was born when parents who had children with downs were told to put their babies in a home and try to forget them. Her parents refused to put Robin in a home and with the help of a nurse they did everything they could for her. She died on August 24 1952. When she died her mother sat down and wrote her first book. She called it “Angel Unaware”. It was 60 years ago and it has touched several generation. I first read it 40 years ago and I have never forgotten it. Her mother wrote many books since then but none have touch people as much as “Angel Unaware” did. The Authors name was Dale Evens. Robin's father was Roy Rogers. They were the king and Queen of the Cowboys. They were heroes when heroes were someone to look up to.

I would like to leave you with this song. It was written by Don Goodman and Becky Hobbs. It was sung by Alabama

Angels Among Us Lyrics

I was walking home from school on a cold winter day
Took a shortcut through the woods, and I lost my way
It was getting late, and I was scared and alone
But then a kind old man took my hand and led me home
Mama couldn't see him, oh but he was standing there
And I knew in my heart, he was the answer to my prayers

Oh.... I believe there are angels among us
Sent down to us from somewhere up above
They come to you and me in our darkest hours
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give
To guide us with the light of love

When life held troubled times, and had me down on my knees
There's always been someone to come along and comfort me
A kind word from a stranger, to lend a helping hand
A phone call from a friend, just to say I understand
And ain't it kind of funny at the dark end of the road
That someone lights the way with just a single ray of hope

Oh... I believe there are angels among us
Sent down to us from somewhere up above
They come to you and me in our darkest hours
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give
To guide us with the light of love

They wear so many faces, show up in the strangest places
To grace us with their mercy, in our time of need

Oh... I believe there are angels among us
Sent down to us from somewhere up above
They come to you and me in our darkest hours
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give
To guide us with the light of love
To guide us with the light of love
