Following Directions

Cat Giamaretta did exactly what the song told him to do after the storm that the news media warned people about for the past couple of days. With his car parked right by the buffer that protected the small town from floods he looked over the picturesque scenery wondering why there was such a tragic plot. Reaching back to the back seat there was a red bottle of wine which he grabbed to bring forward to enjoy as the sun started to develop on the horizon.

“Mia bella rossa,” Cat told the bottle, “I brought my Chevy to the levy, but it did not break so nobody started the filming the scene I was supposed to be in.”

With the river being as calm and placid Cat started to remember how he got into this situation where someone told him that he was an extra in a movie about a small town being flooded. On his answering machine he heard the instructions to go to this spot and sit next to the levy at exactly this time. Then the Director will scream instructions to follow and in the end a hero would arise.

“I love you like mia bella,” Cat opened the bottle to take a swig. As the wine went down his throat nothing happened except for the sun coming up a few more inches. Using the headrest Cat shut his eyes and when they opened there was a dirty blonde girl standing outside his car door.

“Excuse me, do you know where I am supposed to be?” She asked and with a bleary stare Cat rolled down his window, “who are you?”

“They told me an hour ago that I play a character named Surfer Girl Sammie in what they called a Scarlet Jo Feature.”

“If you play a surfer girl shouldn’t you of brought a prop like a surf board?” Cat inquired.

“No, they left a message on my voice mail, come down in a bikini and my character was a zooming star, no surfing skills required.”

“Oh,” Cat opened the car door to step out and look at the talent.

“They said zooming star V4, do you know what that means, V4?”

Cat thought for a moment and then it hit him from all his years working in a video store before the Internet, “V 4 means volume 4.”

Feeling life’s electricity from the new character Cat clearly heard a booming voice out of nowhere, “we have a major script change and the film is no longer entitled “When The Levy Breaks” and the new name is let me get my piece of paper out,” the voice paused, “My Favorite Lover”.

There was stillness just like the body of water which bordered the light that started to shine. “Can you do me a big favor you two,” the voice started up again, “can you go to let me get that piece of paper out once again, Marty’s Minute to Minute Motel on the outskirts of town?” Was the question, “ask Ruthie for the keys to room 4 and when you turn on the light switch that will activate the cameras.” Was the direction.

Looking into the eyes of the character named Surfer Girl Sammie Cat no longer worried about getting liquored up instead a spirited loving priority was taking precedent.

“I think they want a romance based on real life events,” she said.

“Yes, it is going to be a good day.” Cat concluded.
