Elan World 4 - The Ice Castle

by

We peer inside, no one's around and so we fly on in.

An icy crispness in the air makes goosebumps on my skin.

With brave hearts pounding, eyes agog, we move toward the door,

our wings aflutter, moving slowly, feet not touching floor.

Suddenly, a shriek so loud we nearly lost our will.

What godless doings in this place could cause a scream so shrill?

We stop right there and wait as the wails come to an end.

We say a prayer imploring God the injured he'll defend.

"Listen child," she whispers low as we find our strength renewed,

"The evil one who haunts this place was nurtured to be good.

What once was pure in innocence has turned away from light,

our destiny before us is to change what's wrong to right."

We walk a winding staircase that I thought would never end,

down into the dungeon of the castle did it wend.

When we finally reach the base we gaze across the room,

a doorway with a crack of light illumes our way through gloom.

I say, "Oh mother, are there horrors here for us to see?

May we return from whence we came, this is my ardent plea?"

She grasps my hand, I feel her warmth, it keeps me reassured,

we head toward the open door relaxed and undeterred.

What we see upon our entry causes us to gasp!

Lined against each dungeon wall are people bound by clasps-

Elanites, whose only crime is living bold and free,

their bloody wounds bearing witness for all the world to see.

"Shhh," she whispers in my ear as footfalls can be heard,

the menace that has caused this woe perhaps we have bestirred.

No wind to lift our wings to flight, we shudder at our fate,

we really want to free these ones but maybe it's too late.

Voices mutter incoherent words we simply cannot hear,

their steps are getting closer, I cannot hold back tears.

When all seems lost we hear a voice from far across the room,

a little boy calls out to us, "Look up, you'll see the moon."

Sure enough an open window, maybe twelve feet high,

yet how to get there with no breeze just leaves us wondering why?

An unexpected answer comes and bids our hearts to swell,

the wounded people breathe as one and then as one exhale.

We slowly rise and exit that old dank and dusky place,

then leave the castle grounds and head due south without a trace.

It now is quite apparent what our God wants us to do,

the friends we've left behind us must be rescued from this coup.

..."the wounded people breathe as one and then as one exhale." and the last line. Brilliant story, I had read this before, but that stood out in bold font. x
