against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam:
On this date, Specialist Campanella was serving
as a rifleman with his mechanized unit on a
counterinsurgency operation in an area of dense
vegetation As the friendly force proceeded through
the treacherous region, it was suddenly subjected
to intense automatic weapons, rockets, small arms, and
rocket-propelled grenade fire from an undetermined
size insurgent force in well concealed emplacement bunkers
When the lead tank received numerous deadly casualties, and
was forced to withdraw, Specialist Campanella...
immediately dismounted his armored personal
carrier, ran across a bamboo field to aid that weakened crew,
Assuming the position of heavy machine gunner, he began placing
devastating suppressive barrages on this aggressor...
positions as the tank he drove moved forward.
Observing several friendly soldiers pinned down by heavy fire
from an enemy bunker, Specialist Campanella drove...
his tank into an effective covering position while...
he silenced the aggressors with a vicious fusillade
of heavy machine gun fire, His courageous initiative,
