A Score From A Nice Opening

Joe Mooch had his finger in the lake and it created a ripple that went through the village that was placid most of the time. Even at the two-story bar that had a simple DJ dance floor where the community could come together and feel social able the small community was strong in its feeling of pride.

But it was Joe who created the small waves knowing that his good friend Lenny just came back home after making it big with his song “Roll Tide Roll”. It had been a decade since the two graduated from the school that had the nick name ‘Tide’.

Lenny left the area and made a fortune off Joe Mooch’s athletic success and the individual who was timid like a lamb finally decided to show his eyes in the village known for its calm and cool atmosphere.

While walking out of the newspaper office Joe wearing his all-American look since it was the fourth of July feeling better that he got things off his chest about the team’s winnings during his senior year. After a calm discussion with the Editor where he explained the holes were way too big and the job description stated a running back was to go through an open space and run to the end zone.

Without any more guilt Joe entered the coffee shop that was near the only traffic light in the area. While ordering he heard the clinging and when he looked across the establishment there was Lenny with his guitar over his shoulder.

“Well, well, well, that guitar did very well for you didn’t it?” asked Joe.

“It had a nice even money payoff for the show position,” Lenny was being honest.

“I enjoyed it, “stated Joe while the two found a booth, “I enjoyed it so well that I just had a nice conversation with the sports editor and told him about the unbelievable details from my senior year.”

“You mean all the holes that ended up and you ran through it like you were escaping while the Red Sea parted?”

“So, you know?” Joe was looking for the truth.

“Well it was the tale of a song I sung.”

“Roll Tide Roll?” Joe was looking for clarification.

“No, it was the song on the B side called ‘winning with honor’,”

“Then what was ‘Roll Tide Roll about?” The football star inquired.

“Remember when we were five,” Lenny reminisced, “and the lake flooded into your basement and I yelled ‘roll tide roll’ since we were watching the football game?”

“Oh yeah the water parted like it was a miracle so we could run through it,” Joe Mooch remembered with laugh.

When the sun rose the next day Joe Mooch picked the paper to see his picture on the front page of the sports section with the headline “Winning With Honor Of Roll Tide Roll” and as the running back read the story he noticed it was written in a way that truthfully explained the artistic and athletic successes in his hometown that was a village known for its honest nature.
