The Guardians

The night air was blowing through the window and I was flipping a throwing knife in my hand. Cold air came over me and made me shiver before I take aim and released. I hit the wall with a bang, and the giant red bullseye taunting me with my knife about an inch from the center. I gave out a sigh.

“Fix your stance Clarissa your hesitating, you can’t hesitate.” Alec says as he walks into the training room.

“Alec, I’m trying It’s been a long day and I have a lot on my mind, okay.” I said.

“Well as a Guardian of the Shadow world you have to sharpen up on your training.” Butting in Zero who has been sitting on the floor intently cleaning his knives.

“SHUT UP! I don’t want your input you haven’t even helped me today.” I said with attitude in every word as I snapped back at him.

“You never asked.” Zero whispered.

“I didn’t think I needed to.” I spat out the words like poison in my mouth.

“Will you two shut up, god you two always argue.” Alec said with his voice rising with each and every word.

“Zero, help her with her aim I have to teach the Night class.” Alec said as he was walking out of the room.

I was about to protest but Alec left before I could. I wonder why Alec has to teach the Night class what happened to Johnathan he was supposed to teach the vamps today to bad. I walk to the wall and pulled my knife out. By the time I walked back Zero was already up with a knife in his hand ready to throw it as soon as I moved out of the way. As soon as I moved out of the way it was out of his hand in the center of the bullseye.

“You’re such a showoff God Damn I hate it sometimes. Maybe I’m not meant to be a Guardian.

“Don’t say that, you’re perfect in your own way when it comes to your training and skills.” Zero stated with a smile ear to ear.

“Well you know what I think, we should go to the kitchen, get some food and talk to our little warlock friends okay.” Zero smiles which turns into a laugh and he doesn’t have to say anything because I know it’s a yes. So I throw my last blade in hand. I smile, and its bullseye and I skip out of the room happy as can be Zero on my tail. Then like a two year old Zero grabs me by my waist and halls me over his shoulder so I’m facing the back of him. By the time we get to the kitchen where both all bubbly with giggles like we were little kids. As Zero walked into the kitchen with me on his back, we could feel the seriousness in the air and Zero automatically put me down. Everyone except Jocelyn and Julian were standing or sitting by the kitchen table.

“What’s going on?” Zero and I seem to say at the same time as we approach the table. I got a close look at the table and papers were all over. But not just any papers, papers from the Guardians government the Clave. Zero comes to stand next to me with a look of bewilderment on his face.

“What are clave investigation papers doing here?” we seem to be in sink today and we both give each other questioning looks.

“Alec, I thought you were teaching the Night Class today?” I asked curiously.

“Alec, what’s going on? “Magnus seems to ask intently and with curiosity in his eyes as he produces blue sparks from his fingers and he was changing the colors of the water in his glass. It’s out of a nerves habit with him.

“There have been murders being commented on the Night Class students by a werewolf pack for some reason.” Tessa states looking tired and anxious.

“Who would do that, the vamps and wolfs have a truce.” Said Will as he walked into the kitchen with Jem behind him. They both look like they just got done with their nightly run.

“We’re trying to figure that out.” Magnus groans.

“I think that Clarissa, Zero, Johnathan, Emma, Will, Jem, and Izzy should portal to the Academy and patrol the class rooms as well as the Moon dorms.” Magnus says looking very serious and concerned.

I think we all should go the more people the better against a pack of wolfs.” I said as I turned around and went to the fridge, grab a container of spaghetti and two forks, and sit at the table with Zero. I give him a fork and start eating while people being to talk over each other. As the argument continues Zero and I finish eating, then we headed to the training room to put on our gear and rune each other. The Guardians gear is made of a tough but flexible fabric for very fluid movements for protection during battles. The gear is completely black so it’s easy to be concealed from being spotted as easy at night. After putting on all the layers of gear we Rune and Glamour each other. Runes and Glamour’s are the simplest magic in existence, and is the most widely and extensively used because its necessity. Glamour’s are used to hide the magical world from mortals. Runes are meant to protect a Guardian. Runes are used to heal, strengthen, and heighten speed, recall, and track, increase agility and make use soundless. The runes aren’t permanent but are etched into the skin with a stele.

“Mark me with a soundless, agility, healing, and heightened speed rune please.” Zero asked as I grabbed my stele which is a long red triangular crystal with a silver snake wrapped around it. Zero winced a little as I finished the marks.

“Same.” I replied quickly and quietly as I handed him my stele, turned around and moved my hair. I welcomed the pain as Zero touched it to my skin and then I relaxed as Zero went to work. Zero finishes and I turn around, “Thank you. Now let’s get our weapons and head back to the kitchen and see it everyone is ready okay.”

“Okay.” He said as he grabbed his bow and quiver full of arrows, some throwing knifes as I grab my Artemis whip and a belt full of throwing knives and sling it around my waist. “Let’s have some fun.” Zero said with a smile from ear to ear. I looked at him and burst out laughing. We get to the kitchen and everyone is wearing gear and looking like an armory with being loaded to the “Teeth” with weapons except for Magnus and Tessa. But they don’t need gear and they are their own weapon with their magic and all.

“Magnus has the portal ready let’s go and get this over and hope nothing bad happens.” Alec said looking as made as a hornet looking at us very intently.

“Everyone ready to get this over with and fix the treaty for good.” Zero said looking at everybody. We all looked like drawn bows with how everyone was standing.

“Everyone ready to get this over with” Zero said looking at everybody. We all looked so tense and worried.

“Okay let’s go and stop wasting time standing here.” Magnus said with a shaky voice.

As we stepped through the portal to the Academy there was a very Eire feeling that made the hair raise on the back of my neck. It was also unsettlingly quiet.

“It's quite. Too quiet.” Zero said in a whisper standing next to me with every hint of nervousness in his voice possibly.

“Alec, I think we need to get back up.” Magnus said as the wolf’s approached, some in human form and some in wolf form but as equally angry. The only problem was that there was more than a pack there had to be at least four packs of wolfs. “Alec, were outnumbered we need back up. ALEC!” Magnus shouts.

“It's too late we have to try and reason with them.” Alec said with his voice shaking and cracking.

“Alec.” I said in a nervous voice. “We have no choice but to retreat. We need to go.”

“NO! We have to protect the Night Class as Guardians!” Alec shouts.

“Guardians you are no match against us. You are outnumbered. There are what ten of you and sixty of us.” Shouted as if he were a hierarchy. This must be the leader. Alec stepped up with his bow strung ready.

“Why are you attacking the Night Class when you have a peace treaty?”

“Because the vampires took one of our own and turned him. Not a Lycanthrope or a Vampire but a hybrid. An experiment. But he died and the treaty states that we cannot attack, kill and or experiment on the other breed in any circumstances. The clan leader finished with a smile on his face as the shock of this information took over.

“That can't be possible. A hybrid experiment has never been achieved. This is madness.” Alec shouted with anger in his voice. We all looked at each other in a sickening shock.

I stepped up with my Artemis whip in hand. “How do you know?” I struggle to get the words out. “This to be true was there a … body or any witnesses?” I asked on a stuttering and shaky voice.

“There was witnesses and a body.” The leader said with confidence in his voice. “we will get revenge even if we have to kill you to.” Then he changed and charged tackling Alec.

“Aleeec.” Magnus yelled as Zero threw a knife and it hit home killing the leader.

“OH NO WERE FRICKING SCREWED!” Magnus said as the remaining wolfs changed and charged and this is where the fight began.

Alec got up and started shooting with expert aim two arrows at a time never missing once. While Magnus and Tessa were fighting with blue and purple sparks of magic flying everywhere. Zero was dispatching four wolfs while I was occupied with four of my own. Zero with his bow in his hand and his quiver almost empty was aiming at the wolf closest to his while I was whipping away at one of the lasts wolfs alive. Will and Jem came running over and began taking care of the other two wolfs alive. But not for long.

“I guess we didn't need back- up.” I said in a gasp

“YA but we could of still used it.” He replied kind of sarcastically.

I should not have looked at him because the next thing I know is that I have a wolf on me that came out of nowhere. I felt my leg get warm and sticky with blood as the wolf sliced my leg. I screamed at the top of my lungs and gasped as the wolf went for my throat. Everything went blurry and spotted. All I could see was Zero, Will and Jem dispatching the wolf and then at my side.

Zero lifted me onto his lap. “Clarissa you’re okay. You’re going to be okay. MAGNUS! Clarissa’s hurt badly get over here.” Zero shouts with his voice shaking and cracking. . I raised my hand to his face and he leaned into my touch. Was he crying? Magnus and Tessa were at my side in no time.

“Jesus what happened?” Both Tessa and Magnus asked.

“A wolf got on top of her and ripped into her.” Zero was panicked and shaking.

“Try an Iratze.” Will gasped.

At that Zero grabbed my stele from my boot and started to mark my skin. I gasped as the pain started to set in.

“It's not working. Magnus do something there's no time.”

“We can't portal her and my powers are too weak. I'm sorry Zero it's too late.”

“No this can’t be happening.” Zero leans in and puts his face into the crock of my neck and whispers, “Please don't leave me I need you and love you please.” I put my arms around his neck in an embrace.

“It's okay you'll be okay continue being a guardian and protect the Night Class and the people you love. I'll always be with you in here.” I smiled as I touched his heart.

Then my vision went dark, I let go of zero tilted my head back, closed my eyes took my last breath then nothing.
