A rioter with a Molotov cocktail in his hands is not fighting for civil rights any more than a Klansman with a sheet on his back and mask on his face. What needs to be discharged is the intolerable tenderness of the past, the past gone and grieved over and never made sense of. The notion of political correctness . declares certain topics. certain expressions . even certain gestures off-limits. What began as a crusade for civility has soured into a cause of conflict and even censorship.

Buckfield, Maine, has a rather unusual law regarding cab drivers and sex. The legislation declares that no taxi driver 'will be allowed' to charge a fare to any passenger who give him 'sexual favors' in return for a ride home from a nightclub or other 'establishment which serves alcoholic beverages,' or any 'place of business' selling liquor.
