Alison A Smith nee Howarth Biography

Born on an orchard in Central Tablelands, New South Wales, Australia.

Life was a struggle but with 4 siblings there was always something going on.

I have used poetry all my life to guide my thoughts and decipher the world around me.

I spend a lot of time not speaking to a soul. Words on a page have become my companions.

I am "Alone in a crowd".

Alison

I happen to agree with You, Alison. I read poetry sent for a positive review, but don't even understand what the message is or the story, if there is one. I have experimented for years before posting my poetry. My method is to decide what to write, conduct research if needed, take notes, organize them and begin. A poem could take me a whole day to get it right. Then, I let people read them and critique. - Chris

i'm a natural free verser, i find that form gives me the most freedom of artistic expression..prose poetry is becoming very popular and is winning in a lot of the professional comps, so that's a form i'd like to explore more..i'm always looking to the future in poetry and it excites me to see where it might be heading next (hopefully not a.i. don't want more of that)

I think poets should write the way they feel comfortable to express. I like to try new forms if my muse allows. Sometimes I just dont find the words.

I try to keep my forms perfect, Alison, as much as I can... I love writing in rhymes, but have also done free verse at times, I think I have tried out most of the forms mentioned in PS:)

I like to do the same. In some ways I am very much old school, but I am gradually getting my head around some of the newer forms.

The dilemma of subjective phenomenon. Similar to painting and sculpture. "Composition No. II" by Piet Mondrian serves an example. I like abstracts but I find some to be too simplistic.

Yes, there has to be some art to a poem. Maybe my next shopping list should be my next poem. Thank you for you input.

I think most people enjoy reading poems that are in the same style as they themselves choose to write. For me the most enjoyable to read are forms with traditional patterns. I like humor and unique topics and beautiful poems but also dark ones. You can look at any poet's pages by clicking on "forms" and see for yourself which forms they write. I have bonded well with mostly rhyming poets but I also appreciate well written free verse and have a few good friends who write mainly free verse. I know a few poets who write only really short poems such as limericks or haiku. I really enjoy people with great talent in writing short forms. You can find many poets here who are conventional, Alison.

Yes i would agree with liking similar to their own style. The prevalence of poems that are not even reread before posting to check spelling and form is staggering.

Hi, Alison. The American poet, Aram Saroyan, was famous for writing one letter and one word poems. His four-legged “m” has been recognized in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s shortest poem.

Maybe I am just old fashioned. "M" I just dont see as a poem. Why does a poet write - Because they can in what ever form they like.
