I was born under the star sign 'Pisces' and as the saying goes "You can't get over that". I have life-long interests in water, fish, the sea, sailing and everything wet and aquatic. I have a scientific background in the environment and fisheries. I have written extensively on many topics. I have created and manage a gaggle of websites. I have now retired and live in the 'Shark Shack' by the sea near Jervis Bay, on the South Eastern coast of Australia. I sail, fish, walk, dive and swim as much as I can with the motto: 'Diving for Pearls'. My main focus is on didactic poems. I love the poems of Dylan Thomas and my favorite movie is 'Under Milk Wood' (a radio play, made into a film). I also like Les Murray. My website is Poetry Community http://www.poetrycommunity.com.  Cheers!

Tanka Triptych

Blog Posted by John Anderson: 8/11/2025 10:56:00 PM

A tanka triptych is simply a set of three separate tanka poems arranged together so they form a linked sequence that expands on the concept of a Haiku, Senryu and Tanka in exploring different views with a pivot point in three verses as well as internally.

A tanka is a traditional Japanese form with 5 lines and a 5-7-5-7-7 syllable pattern. The tanka often contains a pivot or shift in thought, image, or emotion between the first three lines and the last two.

In a triptych, each tanka works like an individual image or scene, but when you read them together they:
Explore different facets of the same theme.
Tanka 1 — introduces the theme, scene, or emotional ground, as scene 1.
Tanka 2 — develops or deepens it, sometimes offering a counterpoint as scene 2.
Tanka 3 — concludes, integrates or confounds the whole in a fresh or unexpected way as scene 3.
Poets who like to write Haiku, Senryu or Tanka may like to try this form, which I hope will be added to the Soup sometimes soon! Cheers! What do you think?

Sound like it’s an expanded form of Haiku?

Well sort of. It has the three views. But historically I understand that Tanka was the first little pig and Haiku was a shortcut of it. Cheers

Interesting concept, John. BTW Tanka is way different to haiku and senryu AND not an extension of either. Having said that, If I may make a suggestion? Keeping true to the tanka ethos, you might like to explore the 3 distinct phases of the verse: phase 1 (the upper phase) is the objective view; phase 3 (the lower phase)is the subjective view; and the pivot that lends its distinctive poetic device to this form - often an syllipsis. With your proposed form, you might explore these 3 points separately. I am still waiting for PS to include Tanka Prose (a from with traditional roots) as a poetry form ... We live in hope. :)

Hi, Thanks for that. It is not an original idea - it is out there already. Yes your suggestions are worthwhile. To me a haiku has three views or images. Like lily pads in a pond a haiku is a miniature that does not work as a string, whereas a tanka does as a shoot of three connected leaves. In origin terms tanka => renga => hokku => haiku - I think Cheers and thanks
