Robert Gorelick is a former U.S. Navy photographer.  He holds multiple subject and special education credentials from California State University, Northridge.  His first loves are poetry and prose.  He has recently completed a memoir of his Los Angeles youth, in the form of a creative non-fiction anthology.  He spends the preponderance of his spare time in neighborhood coffee shops and hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains.

He has found solace writing prose and poetry.  He is currently finishing a novel for young adults, concerning the themes altruism, selfishness, and the value of friendship.

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Mr. Gorelick has been a winner of numerous contests. In addition, his short story appeared in issues of TNT Magazine and his poetry was published in Issues of Indelible Magazine. The internet opened up a new world for him, and he spends time participating in poetry and book clubs.

"Shakabukued" formerly "Sad Truth" an anthology are nineteen short stories of a youth’s longing for peace of mind and sense of belonging.  The road is long, painful, and circuitous.  A troubled childhood, school bullies, a dubious religious sect, and unscrupulous mental health professionals, make the journey seem futile.  Finding wisdom, purpose and sense of belonging are finally attained from lessons learned and taken to heart.

The trials faced by the protagonist closely mirror my youthful experiences.  He is the one to tell this story because the emotions were his emotions—raw and valid.

My Book of Limericks

Blog Posted by Robert Gorelick: 2/19/2022 1:20:00 PM

Hello,  This is my first blog, so please bear with me.  I am working on a book of doggy limericks and one of people limericks.  Both are family appropriate. i  have been told that they might be apropos for chap book.  I have questions.  For example, is posting the limericks on line a bad idea if I'm looking for a publisher?  Thank you, Robert   2/19/22

Hey Rob, it has been my experience that poems which are put out for public reading are considered published. Most journals, magazines, etc., purchase First North American Serial Rights, which means, as I understand it, that they are getting the first-time right to the piece's appearance in print. So, I'd say, some will not consider a poem's appearance on a group like PS a publication, while others might. I am working on a new chapbook myself, and I will list poems I have put on Poetry Soup in the same way I will show poems published elsewhere. Difference is, I'm not looking for a publisher, as I will self-publish it. I hope this is helpful.

Milton, Your information is most appreciated. I have submitted limericks to an online company publishing chapbooks. I’ll stop posting limericks and look forward to being involved with Poetry Soup for all other kinds of verse. It’s been a great experience. I enjoy the poetry as well as the wonderful people. If the chap book folks aren’t interested, I’d like to look into self-publishing. Being associated with Poetry Soup is a win-win situation for me, published or not! Thanks again, Robert

I think it depends on the publisher. Also since you are not in a book with other poets or competing for anything, it might be ok to use limericks online. Good luck to you.

Although I was in the Gulf of Omen, it was in 1974, during my third consecutive WestPac between 1971 and 1974. We put on an air show for the Pakistani Royals. I worked in IOIC, processing recon targets and BDA.

The Constellation relieved us in April of 1980 in the Gulf of Oman after being on station for one hundred and three days. A belated thank you Richard.
