Has Modern Day Journalism Gone To The “Dogs”?

Dear Soupers:
Please comment on the following concerns below
What the media report and how they report it is becoming a major concern globally. What exactly is the role of the media? Are they out to make money, to inform the society, to wash other people’s dirty linens in public or destroy people’s home and family? Is the media taking over the job of Law Enforcement Officers?
Do you believe that some of the mainstream media should be held accountable for inciting disturbance and destabilizing the society by what, and how they report? A typical example was when the media reported that more than ten thousand people died in moments when the devasting typhoon hit the Philippines. That turns out to be false at the time when it was reported.
Moreover, many journalists have lost their lives in different countries because of their reporting techniques. How can the police catch the “thief” if the media reports the strategy that is being used to catch the “thief” before He is caught?
Do some main stream media take bribe to run certain stories? What punishment should be meted out to the media for their contribution in misinforming, inciting, and destabilizing the society by what they report, how they report it, and the viscous methods that are being used to get those stories. Has the media overstep its bounds?
Thank you
