Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Geoffrey Brewer , one of our own, has passed away

Blog Posted by Andrea Dietrich: 5/20/2022 4:02:00 PM

Today I was informed by Maria Williams that Geoffrey passed away today, May 20, after a surgery he got two weeks ago. She asked me to please post this blog for people to know why he is no longer with us. Maria's sister was a big fan ,so Geoffrey's family had been keeping her informed of Geoffrey's health. I offer my condolences to Geoffrey's family. I was reading some of his poems again today to remind myself of his style as a poet. I saw poems that I recalled as being so clever and astute. It makes me sad to know this good man is no longer with us, but I hope those who knew him will revisit some of his poetry. I believe it's by our writing that we can be remembered by our poetry friends. I would love to hear from those who knew him well. and any memories you have of Geoffrey.

Andrea, it is so kind of you to post a blog to let the community know of Geoffrey's passing, as you also have done with Carolyn and Matthew (and others, I'm sure). I didn't know Geoffrey well enough to post a comment about him here, but I loved reading his thoughtful sonnet 'Spring Contrasts". Though the news is sad, thank you for letting us know we have lost another poetic voice. Condolences to his family.

I just heard from his wife. I asked where he was from, in case there might be an obituary page to sign, like we did when a few other poets we knew of had passed away. Thanks for your words, John.

Thank you for letting us know Andrea. I am so sorry to know about Geoffrey’s journey to the next realm. His poetry certainly inspired. Two of my favorites of his poems are “Omens” and “Sonnet Pathetique”. Geoffrey leaves behind a poetic legacy to be admired by anyone who appreciates the beautiful art of poetry. You will be missed dear poet. Enjoy your lovely afterlife my friend. My sincere condolences to his family. Blessings and Aloha, Connie xxoo

Thanks so much, Andrea, for posting about Geoffrey's passing. I got in touch with my sister to get more recent updates from Geoffrey's wife, who kept Cecilia informed about his welfare from when he went into the hospital. He had to have open-heart surgery, and complications set in soon after. He will be sadly missed. He was indeed a lovely man and a brilliant poet. ...Thanks once again, Andrea

Actually, I have now learned that the surgery went well, but sadly it was maybe from side effects of medicines afterward that his health took a turn for the worse.

I am truly heartbroken to learn that a beautiful poet, Geoffrey Brewer, has departed. The best I can recall our paths crossing was when his, "October Transience", came third in a 2019 November contest that won him a year of PS membership. Several times of uplifting commentaries we have left for each other since. My sincerest Aloha to his loved ones and acquaintances. A joyful journey my friend, Aloha ke Akua pu.

Yes, Andrea, he was awarded a year PS membership at that time, albeit, he did win in an earlier contest that had winning placements and no other compensation ... he will be missed.

This is so sweet of you to say. Did he get that PS membership thanks to one of your contests?

I echo Tom Cunningham’s sentiment ~ we are all vibrationally connected. May Geoffrey’s soul rest in peace, in God’s domain of boundless love & light.

You know it says so much about the power of this site when a person I had never met leaves such a big hole in my heart with his passing. I loved clicking on Geoffrey's page and reading his poems beneath that picture of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He kindly commented on many of my poems - the last being towards the end of March this year. I am truly sad this morning. RIP Geoffrey. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. Gary

We shared a love of the old steam trains Andrea. I refer to them in several of my poems. Geoffrey once commented: "Having been brought up in the railway town of Swindon (England) in the last days of steam and the old rural slow lines, it (my poem) brings back many memories". His own poems were very clever. He was a true poet. Scratch that. He remains a true poet.

I would imagine more than a few pass away yearly because this is a big site, but many poets do not know many others here. I hope Maria might tell his family of the responses here so they might read what is said here.
