My name is Caren; I was born an identical twin in a small rural town in Iowa; I live in the country; roosters wake me up. They are not my own roosters, but live behind me, and are eager to be helpful.  I am an artist, a cartoonist, a painter, a poet, a writer, and a game-player. When I was younger I knew all kinds of card games. When my children were small, I played many board games. They stopped playing with me when they realized if I was losing, I would diminish my age, turn younger than them, and throw the board.  I was once addicted to resale, and yard sale shopping. Every time I think I have broken myself of that habit, I have a relapse and drag home bags and boxes of other people's junk that I think I will someday use. More often than not, these found items end up recycled in other junk shops or recycle bins after I did not use them at all.  I'm an elementary school counselor, which means I teach children about respect, responsibility, and how to love each other and make friends. I love my life; I have been with the same man for 50 years, and our home is saturated with my paintings of booby women, because I love to draw and paint them and my husband loves me. I have three daughters, two sons-in-law, six granddaughters, and four grandsons, so my cup is full and happy.

Fear Killed My Paternal Grandmother on Good Friday, 1951.

This blog is for all of the people out there who think it won't happen to me, I'm invincible, I cannot die - the young people who text while driving. What? Who would do that? Do you not realize each car on the road is a potential weapon, and one second looking away can cost you or someone else their life? And it is for the women who get a mammogram every eight years instead of every year, or six months - women like me and my paternal grandmother. In 1951 my paternal grandmother, Marguerite passed away, leaving three boys and a husband, in abject sorrow because her death could have been prevented. She had a lump in her back, and  she was too AFRAID of knowing what it was to see a doctor. She had PREVENTABLE cancer that could not be prevented, because she was afraid of the truth, so she kept it a secret until it was too late, and she had to go to heaven. She had three sons. The youngest was 12, and no one had warned him. They were afraid to tell him that he was losing his mother, so he went crazy when he got  home from school, after not being told for 6 months, and his mother was GONE on Good Friday.  She was buried on  Easter Sunday. A woman with three boys who had always wanted a little girl. My identical twin sister and I were born the next year, so she missed that on earth. A year later our darling girl cousin, Lou, was born. She too is delightful and adorable, and she missed her on earth too. Something is in the air today because first I was going to type a light poem, that ended up being my heaviest poem ever, it made ME cry. And now I'm typing this because my paternal grandmother is here, urging me on. Women, stop keeping secrets, and keep your eyes on the ROAD. We want you SAFE here, you can go there later.  God Bless you all, Happy Good Friday, Fun Saturday, and Easter Sunday. Just a messgae from the heart, because I love you.

Thanks for posting this most touching write, Caren. Too busy or too afraid or both. What a tragic result. Food for thought for all of us.
