presentational 'style' ... namely ...as in the open verse line break style ,......

once described as

'a device to resolve the conflict between form and freedom in verse'

and..is perhaps best understood ,as exampled by Hilda Morley's style ,(that she labelled 'organic')  

it starts this way..

 

 

Last night

              tossed

in my bed

               the sound of the rain turned me

around,

               a leaf

in a dried gully

           from side to

side

What especially appeals to me about this style and therefore used in the majority of my endeavours..is it becomes a unique experience ,for the reader necessarily participates and..the enigmatic evolves suggesting various alternatives thus being similar to the one off experience of an art gallery viewing

I totally agree. I have been working on this style for a couple of years (on an experimental basis) still trying to clarify how to achieve a way to not make it seem a hodgepodge. ~beto

Thx Brian for your comments on "presentational" style. I am unable to find any further info on this term but assume that it refers to a style which I have referred to as "typographical punctuation". Obviously it can be used only with Free Verse and related open forms. I see in her biography that Morley mentions WC Williams comment about making the rhythm of a poem from the elements of ordinary speech. The earliest example of WCW's presentational style that I know is "The Wind Increases" (not certain of the exact date). Also thx for bringing Morley to my attention. ~beto

Beto here is an extract from my review of Hilda's collection 'Cloudless at first' which expands a liitle more on this style .. ".The open form presentation fulfills Morley's primary concern for emotional accuracy in her writings, molded in its phrasing and spacing to conform to the pressures of the poetic content.A process achieved with the use of indents&spaces ,which with the limiting factor of one breath length , naturally incorporates the cadence thereof."

Hilda first used the term 'organic 'circa 1970's.I called my version 'open' circa 2012 when I started writing my poetry in that presentational way.I discovered a couple of years back now the technicalities thereof in the 1970 era.Cheers Beto.
