MY POET AND POEM OF 2018

Blog Posted:12/28/2018 3:40:00 AM

The poet and poem that stands out for me and made my poetic year

Walt Whitman and his epic poem Song of Myself

for me a MasterPoet of poetics in the English languge and the piece of poetry that had the most impact on me as a poet in the past year.

Here is part 33 of 52 of the epic poem of the 19th century.

(2) About 17 years ago I was gifted, (on Christmas), a very rare printing of "Leaves of Grass", and to say it is my prize possession would ALSO be an understatement. Despite its actual value, it is priceless to me. I keep it sealed, usually, but sometimes take it out to actually READ it ... I think WALT himself would "yawp" me into shame, were the leaves not creased a bit, lol. I would be honored if you gave my poem, (dedicated to him), a peruse sometime, (I also sketched the pic that accompanies it) ... it has many references to his work and phrasing, and you might find it fun. Blessings! (Here's the link:) https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/of_captains_and_cradles_1095775

A grand tribute Greg,to a master poet, the only missing aspect of your couplet poem (for me) is to hear an American accented voice recite it.Perhaps a clip on youtube after style of PoetryMatters. The icing thereon ,to put one of your pieces of music ,with a background visual of your excellent portrait of your hero.

Whitman is my hero, Brian, and my favorite human being from history ... I have studied and read and absorbed as much as possible since the day I first read "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking", and to say "Song of Myself" is a masterpiece would be an understatement, but not enough adjectives exist for that, in my opinion. I like to think, (fooling myself, I imagine, lol), that I have gained a small bit of insight into the man over the years, and I believe he fought many of the same demons I have, and found that "beauty in the darkness" - a truce, (or at least an understanding), of death and its value to the preciousness of life and love. Love this ode to my hero! (continued)

For me Greg,it always the 'song' rather than the 'singer'(but to explore that fully, would need another blog)suffice to say I thank God for his 'poiema' giftings to us so clearly shown by Walt.

Brian, what a way to close out the year! Section 33 in some ways reminds me of "On the Road" with Charles Kuralt, or Johnny Cash's "I've Been Everywhere." At the end of the section he becomes Everyman. It's going to take me most of 2019 to sort out all 52 sections. Thanks for the homework! ~Mark

One way for me Mark,is to follow the words as they are recited(to background music and visuals)in the youtube PoetryMatters youtube clips as in my link.Currently reached no 40,12 remain.(It's a bit like your current marathon project)
