HOW TO WRITE A POEM some good advice

Academic and poet Hans Ostrom(who featured in my blog below ,a couple of days back) suggests to  write a poem.' Make it for yourself and fit it to you,' ...write it for love and for free'.. ..,own what you write and give it away.'*

What advice would you give from your experience?

*Hans has done this by his large collection of YouTube clips!

(continued) I don't do this all the time, in fact most often I have a clear idea of where I'm going, but I think to ONLY write when everything is "just right", or only when you're "moved" to, or even only when you've learned forms and boundaries, can be stifling. Sometimes the creativity wants OUT, and will use a portal we may not be familiar with or comfortable with, and I would argue that THOSE are usually the only times we grow and improve, outside our comfort zone - who is to say when that is?? To put limits on imagination and creativity is asking for mediocrity, and I personally believe we are ALL capable of much more than that ... if we LISTEN. I pray my work will speak for itself. ;-)

Yes a bit of spontaneity Greg is very liberating.Like trying a Pollock style floor art.

My advice would be to 'learn' some of the basic poetics ,for a while,especially the short forms.Then experiment with 'open forms' until a ' unique to you ' develops

I am a firm believer in writing from the heart, that way poetry comes out sincere and a true creation that carries the poet's DNA. But all methods are valid if they achieve their goal to elicit emotion. My humble two cents for what it's worth LOL.

"A writer writes ... always!" Write for ANY reason, just write! Some of the best, most cathartic work I've produced was created when I had absolutely NO compass or inspiration or muse ... I know that would probably raise screams of horror in a college writing class, but I believe we are just tools for a creative conscience, (God/higher power - whatever you call it), and learning to HEAR that voice begins by just articulating/activating, and staying attuned to what happens. Put the pen to paper, (or fingers to the keyboard), see where it takes you, and apply those results to your puddle of wisdom ... swirl it, dip your toes, taste the sweet and bitter! Excuse the cliche, but - JUST DO IT!
