Rather obviously,a poem relies on words alone, sounds and meanings, pause and silence etc
On the otherhand whilst a lyric uses similar poetic techniques and devices it is supported by our sister artform ,music, and all that that art can conjure up and arouse within our emotions . But also the music can distract from, rather than enhance the meaning for words of the lyric are a complementary twin rather than a separate piece of art. Often, simplicity as in poetic imagism, is more appropriate, often too wordy, lofty, or the abstract can have no place.
Here is a link to a you tube poem by the hymn lyricist Ada Habershon,(written in 1906) which I have recited as a kyrielle without the refrain. It has great simplicity in both word and form and imho works poetically.
However listen to this futher youtubeclip where this lyric has been refashioned with a modern worship song, with the addition of a concluding verse
Of course by giving Bob Dylan the Nobel prize for literature perhaps this is a recognition that yes, song lyrics can indeed be poetry?
What do you think, has your poetry been put to music? Do you have a viewpoint.
