A SPINOFF BLOG on poetry forms

Blog Posted:6/11/2017 10:18:00 AM

This blog is a spin off from blog below on writing by numbers..

in 1995 pre the internet era poetry was not a hobby of mine but I had always been interested in words and especially 'oneliners' .

As some may know from earlier blogs here many moons ago now, for some reason as I sat in my back garden in the shade on .  a day much like today.. a poem popped in my head..it was an alliteration with a Christian theme.I sent to a magazine who encouraged me by publishing it.It was entitled ' Connections ' and is published in my anthology here on PS.( I have it in a little frame in our lounge to remind me where I started this long poetry journey that led me here in 2007)

It wax a few years later that I came across the American cinquains of Adelaide Crapsey and it was this delightful five line form that stimulated  the spark to my becoming a poet.

Is there a particular form that your muse used to prompt you to write poetry?

Do share it with us, perhaps there is a title in that form even now   in your anthology here at PS that we can read?

When I learned about sonnets, I realized I had found my niche. Before that,I had been doing long boring couplets. Sonnets make you limit what you need to say but allow you to do it in a beautiful way. If one can write a sonnet, they also can learn to write many other rhyming forms. I also enjoyed discovering the correct way to write tanka and Haiku (though those are still difficult for me to do them the right way). There is such great beauty in succinctness.

Indeed there is Andrea, the Imagism movement would have agreed with you.The sonnet is indeed the cornerstone on which English language poetry was built and developed

I enjoy writing short poems that are didactic, have a message or play with words. I find the haiku and senru a bit too short. Cinquains are better with a 'sting' in their 'tails'. I find the BELL form (a new one - see the competition, with 1,2,4,6,8,10,2,1 syllables) useful as it is a little longer than a cinquain and finishes with a two line 'clanger' at the end. It is similar to the ninette form with a 'bell' shape when center align is used. PS - I got kicked out of one poetry site after the editor deleted some of my works - claiming they were 'not poetry'. Hmmmm!

I too found the American cinquains developed by Adelaide Crapsey (five line form) inspiring. But my real inspiration was Dylan Thomas, especially Under Milk Wood, the radio play made into a film, which really brought the radio play / poem to life for me. I am inspired by the word craft and 'density' of Dylan Thomas, though I find his poems 'difficult' to understand.
