IS YOUR POETIC STYLE RECOGNISABLE ?

Blog Posted:4/4/2017 2:28:00 AM

The majority of artists ( and many poets/writers) have a 'style' that is easily recognisable and to some extent becomes a kind of artistic 'trademark' ...Klimt , Van Gogh ,Monet etc etc

Poets such as Emily Dickinson , Marianne Moore,  for example also bear a clearly recognisable 'style' that almost  defines them

Why should this be ?  and is it universal to all  poets here on PS ?

Do we reveal (despite ourselves , come what may),  some aspects of our  innate character both in our poetry (and for that matter in our blog and other comments .) ?

What do you think ?

There are several poets at Soup i can know right away who they are. This is what makes "judging blind" a kind of ridiculous thing for me. i think I am very eclectic and though I bet i have a recognizable style, I might be able to fool people from time to time by writing something they don't know is coming from me at all!! Good blog.

I too have a recognisable style Andrea but I do surprise people when I write a more serious poem from time to time:-) hugs Jan xx

Perhaps one of the things here on PS that makes a difference is that our poetry is not presented as 'collected poems' as they are in the published poetry book .Mostly 'My poems' are posted somewhat eclectic in response to contest themes / forms. So consistent style is not quite so discernible

I have a very obvious way of expression , even though I change the style it will always stay within the confines of my signature, however I find some poets writing becomes annoying because of thier unwavering style and constant obvious lack of change.....but if that is the warmest blanket, then so be it....

One of the reasons why a well known artist or poet has a recognisable artistic 'dna' is many people have seen them in galleries ( and now on the net) or read their poetry or reviews, critiques etc thereof .To a lesser degree that would apply here on PS,though having sponsored 270+ contests I could not be categoric where the poetry is read blind. But later or when the poem has a name when read then some inherent familiarity in style come across. This came be even more clear in the 'style' used in blog comments and the like that I am now writing athis very second. We are who we are!

Definitely do reveal some aspects of our innate character. Yet that may not mean there is a clearly recognizable style. How many really active poets are there on PoetrySoup? 50? 100? Fairly small sample size makes it easier to make good guesses about who wrote what - would be a lot harder if the sample size was 100 or 1000 times larger. Our minds are different, and thus our favored approaches will be too, but the individual still may vary so much, and be drawn into other modes by contest requirements, for one example, that by no means is it universally true that a clearly recognizable style will be present.

I think We all have that something different in our poetry...We all have 'Our style', and that's what makes poetry beautiful...We are all alike and unique at the same time.I can recognize certain poets'poems without a name at times, especially if they are poets I read for years :), like you.Great Blog.

With an advanced 'smart phone' I took an image inside my brain, and there were like 1000 monkeys in there, many of them quite drunk, pounding away on typewriters.

I believe all of us have a signature style whether we try to or not because we are all unique. Could be word choices, the layout of the poem on the page, is it centered, italicized, bold? Even the titles become a signature, are they capitalized, lower case, showing a form, etc. Of the poets I read on this site I believe I could read a poem with no name and come very close to being correct if I were to guess who wrote it. We are all different and regardless of how much we try to emulate another's style, it is still our own and after a time becomes recognizable. At least that is my opinion.

Chris. : ) My opinion - there indeed are "Chris Green poems" that are easily identifiable. Yet this does not extend to all your work. I think we have a mix, always - some people are easier than others to identify, and among one person's poems, some there too will be easier than others to attribute.

Oh yes, I believe we do reveal a part of ourselves in everything we write, Brian:) as for me, most of my poems are subjective, so it shows:)

I am well known for my humourous style(although I have been known to surprise with the odd serious poem) and I will be proud to wear my queen of poop poetry crown for as long as I can as my aim is to make people smile and forget their worries for a while.:-) hugs Jan xx

Yes, that is how we are known on this site, (albeit imperfectly, as the full story cannot be found in the inherent caginess that writing represents).

Doug, But don't you feel that, in reading (paid for) confessional pieces, you are encouraging poor writing?

Julia, I love that "inherent caginess" phrase. : ) Also think that some immensely compelling writing can be found in pieces that are confessional in nature, i.e. without much or any stuff being hidden.
