TOO abecedarian for my TASTE

Acrostics,for me are appropriate as a poetic learning tool but can be a little contrived,and abcedarian and lose their poetics,(when hidden by translation as with the Hebrew bible,Proverbs 31 and as a memonic ,as with the Christian  fish symbol  they have appeal), but in English, the letter capitalisation distracts my seeing eye and poetic enjoyment.

John Cage,typically,wrote poetic mesostic,acrostic  variants but like his music I find conceptual beauty of his talent  lies more in the simplicity of his piano pieces 'Dream' & In a Landscape'.

I have never been a big Acrostic writer but as a writing exercise I try them occasionally. I went to you tube and listened to both pieces and really enjoyed them. Thanks for this info......love taking these mini journeys with you. SuZ

As I mention in my blog profile in regard to my contests.The 'poetics' of the poem is the only thing which counts,whether one line or twenty.(or none ,as the winner of my recent contest showed)

I have done many for contests. Half felt contrived for me but the other half I felt very good about. But now I know why I never win with my acrostics with you!!!

I had a feeling after I commented this that you may not like the first letters being bolded. Many judges like it that way, so I guess it's all a matter of taste!

Andrea you could try and de-emphasise/ de-capitalise the first letter of each line and let the poetics speak for itself.Just saying...

I like to take forms like acrostics and accept the challenge of writing something that is not childish or school assignment like using them. (They are also quite good for greeting card style poems where the holiday is emphasised.) I do strongly agree that abecedarian can lose its form - when some have been entered into my contests I struggled to find the form & was not sure the users knew the definition. I admire your strength in making the above statements.

I can appreciate Cage's mesostics on an intellectual level as an interesting experiment with language, but as poetry they do not speak to me.
