CAUSE AND EFFECT perhaps perhaps not (Emily D spin off)

Blog Posted:7/11/2017 3:45:00 AM

Often in writing a biography of the 'famous' artist or poet etc it is concluded that somehow their 'personal happenings' may have impacted upon their art(see some comments on Emily D blog).

If this were to be applied to you and( without becoming too confessional) would a biographer conclude from your poetry a similar inference.?..or are you of the school..

..that an artists life has no relevance to their art!

Do not ALL  our 'happenings' sub consciously become the mosaic kaleidoscope through which our words or drawings emerge?

Emily is pretty much loved and many articles about her are pretty. I really like Emily because you have something that is very hard to describe. Make your heart skip a beat, but each time you sip a glass of tea in her poem.

Yes I agree. The editor of another site dismissed my poetry because it was 'scientific' => "science and poetry don't mix like science and religion". One poem about old age was deleted because it was 'derogatory' and not 'pleasant nor enjoyable' to read. I am a scientist, and cantankerous at times, and so be it. As Henry Lawson (an Australian bush poet) said: "You were born on Grenfell goldfield — and you can't get over that." => "Such is Life" said by Australian bushranger, Ned Kelly, just before he was hanged. Cheers

The vast majority of my poems are written about memories, events, loves, losses, hardships, hopes, future promises and oft regrets in my long life. Some reveal much more of themselves in their poetry. And even that has drawbacks as , many readers-even other poets view such naked exposing ones soul to be just too much.. Whereas I say--Poet let thy heart speak and as long as its sincerity and truth, ignore the naysayers. Takes a bit of courage to do..

AND THIS IS NO CRITICISM OF THOSE THAT ARE FAR MORE RESERVE IN THEIR WRITINGS! As a great many such poets I admire with abandon and bow to their massive talents, creativity and honor.

I think everything we do has to have some mirror of our lives, some reflect their lives more than others because their favorite subject matter is from personal experiences, like Robert Frost's Mending Walls or Birches etc. Where Longfellow and others were more inclined to write about history or fictional characters. Therefore, the poetic "DNA" would be much more difficult to discern in a Longfellow than a Frost or Dickenson type poet.

Oh, I agree Brian and I have really liked her poetry. All I'm saying is that she was a recluse and never led a normal life. I've been to her museum which is just north of Springfield Mass. She didn't even meet with her "friends", of which there were very few, very often. In short, outside of reading, she was not a "woman of the world". However, it must be said that many of the greatest artists of all time had serious mental issues, but they were gifted in their art and saw things, because of their afflictions, in ways many of us cannot.

But she was widely read Craig, which I think accounts for great variety of topics she covered in her 1775 poems

Poor Emily pretty much had to write about personal experiences because she didn't get out much.
