HOW DO I LOVE THEE

The Brownings,early English Victorian poets were twin souls,and kept close all day long,their love impulsed their poetry ,(especially Elizabeth,read her poem How to I love thee)

Do you  write personal love poetry to someone dear to you?

I have done so a few times ,on anniverseries etc to my wife.Sometimes adapting poetry previously penned so that it becomes specific and other times amending more famous ones like My blog title,

Although my wife are very close (almost one after 55 years plus of marriage) she is not into poetry but she did welcome my poetic love endeavours.

One of the things about love(I read this just this week)is that to love is to make oneself vulnerable.We are so self absorbed to be so fully committed is very difficult for the human heart.Elizabeth and Robert's bio clearly show that was the case for them

Ruben's point about age below,is very significant.He and I have been 'internet friends' here for almost a decade and I am old enough to be his father,(possibly I am old enough to be a grandfather to many of you)and yet our common interest crosses 'age barriers' because we do not ' age ' within .A concept that one only learn gradually as we 'age' in the 'barrel' of life.

I have to believe that even if one's spouse or loved one is not poetically inclined (or is simply "ho-hum" about poems in general)...it can mean more to them than we may think at first glance. One Father's Day, and again on our anniversary, I wrote love poems to my husband, who quietly accepted them with a smile and a small kiss, then went merrily on his way. Later I would find both poems framed under glass and hanging above his tool bench out in his workshop (along with crayon-colored pictures drawn by our grandchildren). He is non-verbal about these things, but sentimental, and I know they touch him to the core. Many more happy years to you and your love, dear Brian!!

Yes Carrie we 'quiet silent types' often hold back the expression of our feelings.But the saying ' actions speak louder than words' is more telling as your husband's example.shows.I never openly wept until I was born again in 1987.Now I know my emotions are a natural part of the real me!
