Hollow Hearts

My hurt tempts my heart
to grow bitter and cold
I've always dreaded
the regret once I'm old.
Anguish lingering deep
today was exposed
oh, so very brief
and nothing like what was supposed
my mind struggling to fathom
how it has come to this
how can she send away her children?
and what if this were her dying wish?
Never would I have thought,
she would deny me
in what could be the end.
I guess my pessimism
has had merit
sometimes love cant mend
So now shall I bear hurt,
anger, the rest of my days?
How shall I ensure
this legacy's not set in my ways?
so long I've felt damaged
from a relationship gone raw
my mother, her daughter
in hollow hearts even tears draw.
seeping from within
permeated with guilt, sorrow, hate
escaping on occasion
never fully to precipitate.
like ground water, tears roll,
and sink back within
tainted by fresh emotion
to simmer till fate calls again
now left torn
with possibly a decision I can't make
is this our last interaction?
the final mark on the slate?
How much sadder could this be?
This story of past, present, future
the demise of a family,
stricken with no cure
If she were lost,
this, the last memory to taste,
I'd help that world fall away,
with hurt-filled haste.
I'd escaped the knowledge of that tree
where once stood a branch
and the name scrolled on it once for me
wilted by hot tears that blanch
I'd sail away my compassion
every thing within that I've held dear
watch it drift out to sea
and then steer clear
times like these
mar the soul
leave you ever-plagued
always this hurt
is carried
carried to the grave.
