How I feel about Poetry Soup

I joined this site called Poetry Soup

So I could write about turds or poop

I’m not sure that some folk in this group

Know humor, or are just out of the loop

I was stunned to be awarded Poem of the Day

I was so thrilled, I didn’t know what to say

Until trolls on the site made nasty remarks

But their bullying ways are their trademarks

At first Soup was fun I’d read work late at night

But this year I have hardly logged on to the site

It’s a pity that I’ve been deterred from writing

I sought peace and quiet and not back biting

My poetry style is straight from the heart

Who cares if I write about a foul smelly fart

I don’t care if folk don’t like poems on flatus

Because I write for fun not poet laureate status

John, I am one who likes fun poems, but also your poem brings up a serious problem on this site. My opinion is that PS, has some mean tempered hateful people but they are out numbered by the good. Block the bad and keep the good. Congrats on receiving POTD~

People are of different mental disposition. Some see more of the positive side while some others see only negativity. Ignore it and keep writing. All the best. Congratulations on your POTD.

Congratulations John on POTD. Those who can thrill and seek. Those who can't just write critique.

To each his own. I’m always amazed at what passes for virtuosity. I mean, there are people who think Kimmel is funny and Warhol was some genius artist. There’s no telling what people like or are bored to tears by. A banana duct-taped to a wall sold for 6.2 million at auction. Poetry, like art and beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

Enjoyed reading your verse. Congratulations on your POTD. I too advise, ignore the negative and enjoy the encouraging words that are positive.

Many write to bring a smile, and while it lingers from end to start, priceless are those whispering words that touch the heart. Always keep an open mind and stay true to who you are. The more you look beyond the chaos that surrounds, here, there and everywhere; the better moments become. : ) Congratulations John, on Poem of the Day. It's nice to meet you. ~ Brandy

Let it all out John, you have absolutely nobody worth hiding away from on this site, it’s fun to see a poem about one’s POTD receiving POTD, log on! and don’t let anyone interrupt you when dropping a log, congratulations on a most liberating POTD, cheers David

Congratulations on your POTD! The honor is ours. Thanks for your blatant poetic style of honesty. Hope you come visit my poems though I still haven't received this status. I'm off to read some more of yours ...

John, pay no attention to the negative comments. My opinion is that if a poem offends someone then they can move along, not leave a comment. I agree with Lin about freedom of speech. There are some on PS that come out of the woodwork to leave rude and unsupportive comments and are not supportive and do not contribute to the site in a positive light.

Freedom of speech extends to freedom of the press in what poets write. Everyone has an opinion and even if they differ, there’s no need to display that difference with opposing, bullying remarks whether it’s poop poetry, political points of view, or religious beliefs. No excuses that would try to placate otherwise.

Congratulations on your POTD win. I enjoyed reading your "How I feel about Poetry Soup" write. I also did this contest. Write On..... Have a blessed day/week with your wonderful win...............

Just a thought John, I'm not sure if you are aware but there is a block feature on soup - it's the little 'eye' by a person's name. You could use that and also screen shot comments and send them to admin but from past experiences little is done to stop the issues.

Humour is king John, just ignore the bullies and trolls on here. Congratulations to you on today's POTD honour. Tom

You’ve opened the aperture to shed light on the existence of trolls and bullying on the site. As POTD, more will read you and be made aware of the havoc they cause. L Milton Hankins once wrote, “I do not suffer bullies and trolls gladly.” We shouldn’t have to suffer them at all.

congrats on your POTD

John, a great poem and I agree. Congratulations on POTD.

Congrats on POTD! Poetry has a measure of catharsis. Don’t let diarrhea of the mouth nor a backup in the rear compartment be a cause to stop writing. Every poet is different.

Dropping back with many congrats on your second Poem of the day John! I am so delighted you posted this poem, it highlights issues which have gone on for years . The 'Report' button doesn't work so issues have not been dealt with but hopefully it will be fixed 'soon'. Enjoy the honour John and keep on writing humour especially poop lol:-) hugs Jan x

I agree John, don’t let anyone spoil the fun. Congratulations on having received poem of the day… Beryl

John doesn’t let bullies control the narrative. We need you and your humor more than ever on soup! I have blocked three poets and life on soup is better! I am happy you won potd! It’s sad some people take themselves too seriously and need to bully! Screw them defy them and write on! Congratulations on your eloquent potd!

Hello John, this is so sad. I also had a few swipes on my work too. It did dampen my spirits for a bit but I rose above it and continue to write as I like writing. I do hope that you will not give up and continue having fun writing away. Wishing you a fabulous new week ahead.

John, I’m actually glad to read your lines that express your feelings about why you haven’t been active on the soup. It exposes your valid reasons… reasons that many poets have felt over the years about trolls who try to suck the breath and writing spirit from some of us. I speak from first hand experience. I see that Jan has commented on your thoughts, too. She’s been berated for years about her poop poetry, but she’s published 2 successful books based on potty humor. My point is that you should not have your poetic flame extinguished by anyone. Write what you feel and the heck with what anyone thinks or writes to deter you. They are tumbleweeds blowing in the wind and full of hot air.
Date: 2/15/2026 12:31:00 PM

aww John, I am sorry you have had to write on your bad experiences on soup. I have found the same and been bullied over my style to the extend I nearly left in 2014 a few weeks after I joined. Keep on posting poopy fun poems and don't be deterred from having a a bit of fun with words. Hugs Jan xx
