Mothers

I am kind and understanding
I have survived her’s father
I have survived the Connection
But I am nothing without my daughter
Her link has been broken
But fear of death is my drive
I will not have another daughter
Her reconnection, I will not survive
I know I am strong
But I know I am weak
I can run away from abuse
But I cannot run from what I seek
Her father is successful and strong
I love how my anklet glows
But it is the only glow I have
I lost my glow long ago
Now she carries it
She takes my heart as well
As a Connected, she destroyed it
As my child, she wears it well
But I fear she carries my weakness
I fear our barriers are built the same
But if she carries my resilience
She will keep the family name
I dream of grandchildren that laugh and play
Ones that know no sorrow
I hope they will be cared for
For the next day may bring her father
I know he means well
He wants to live beyond his past
But the culture buries his emotions
And his family feels the lash
But I’ve taught her well
A great mother she will be
And I will be a loving grandmother
As long as there is no unexpected company
There are days I worry more
There are days I check her breathing
But I know her spirit will live on
That I will never stop believing
I am known for my actions
I don’t check before drinking the water
But poison brings me no fear
For I fear I am nothing without my daughter
