Walk with me

Walk with me now, will you?
I’ll even lend you
my shoes
So you can see what it’s like in them.

Do you see what I see?
When you hurt my brothers and sisters
When you see my skin as a threat?

Do you feel how I feel?
When you push me into the concrete
When you put those, cold, metal chains on my wrist?

Do you smell what I smell?
The smell of your breath while you yell at me
The smell of the sweaty prison you put me in for no reason?

Do you taste what I taste?
The blood trickling down my nose into my mouth
The taste of hatred against my chocolate skin

Do you hear what I hear?
The sirens I hear while I’m in the back of your car
“I CAN’T BREATHE”
I bet you didn’t hear that did you?

Look at my shoes
they’re all worn out
Worn out from your constant hate against me
I was walking and now I’m running
