First Date

I loved you before I knew your name.
I think it was your smile
and the sparkle in your eyes.
So alive and radiant
and full of wonder.

All that, and your empire waist dress
with the floral print.
And your long straight hair
with those great bangs
cut just above your eyes.
How my spine tingled.

I asked you out, you said yes.
We wound up by the lake,
just talking, yet somehow we both knew
that we were meant for each other.
That moment in time
stood perfectly still as I proposed.
You answered me with a kiss
that took my breath away.

That was so many years ago,
your eyes haven’t lost their sparkle
and my spine still tingles.
