Where I Stand

Where do I stand in this world today
perpetually involved in confusion
I'll silently let myself slip away
into a wonderful grand illusion
If it's something I've seen
that's causing me pain
I'll pretend for a while that I'm blind
If it's something I've done
that's causing the shame
I'll just leave my conscience behind
It may work for a while
but in the end
When I'm lost from pretend and what's real
No longer could I, my own heart mend
It doesn't sound like an even split deal
I chose to be strong
and work for myself
Not like a puppet who waits on a shelf
