Kitten

One morning you wake up,
to see a kitten in your cup.
You think " am I in a dream,
or a well thought out scheme."
Then you remember the night before,
you found a kitten mewing at your front door.
You pick it out of the cup,
just as it wakes up.
You think, "Oh, how cute!",
as it starts to play in your boot.
You and kitten play all day,
and you pray that kitten will always stay.
But you know that kitten won't be there one day
to have, to play with as you may.
So, if you have a cat,
do what I tell you in fact:
Treasure each day, as if it were gold,
even if your kitten dies young while you grow old.
Tell it that it will always be loved,
even after it is sent up above.
