New Year

The New Year
Arrives
In a pack
Of playing cards!

No one knows
What the New Year
Holds for us!

The pack contains
52 cards
Plus two jokers!

The 52 cards
Make the 52 weeks—
One card
For each week!

The jokers
Symbolise
Joy and sorrow!

One of them
Will attend on us
All the time…
So there is a fair mix
Of both
For us
Through the year!

That is the way
The New Year
Is going to be!

That is the way
Life is going to be…

Realisation

My head is
In the air
It is in space

My feet
Are grounded
They are on earth

My stomach
Is trapped
In-between

But, that is what
Makes me do
All the things I do

God knows where I am
I am neither here
Nor there

Give Peace a Chance

Human beings must travel back in time
To give peace a chance
We must go back to the time
When there were no confrontations
When there were no fights
When there were no battles
When there was no war

The time machine will tell us
That those were the times
When human beings were scattered
Across the entire globe
There was little contact
So, there was peace

In those good old days
There were no tribes or races
No religions or faith
There were no countries
Or political boundaries
There were no ethnic groups
Or communities or societies
Or castes or outcasts
Or creed or colour
Or greed or ego

There were no
Flags or emblems
Or political groups
Or religious denominations
That divided people
And motivated them
To take up arms
Against one another

We can bring about peace
By working for unity
For freedom
For equality
For brotherhood
Because, anything that divides
Is bad for peace
Give peace a chance
By rising above petty considerations

Let us be human beings
And be humane in our approach
Let us turn ourselves into noble souls
Let us give peace a chance

Winter Blues

The Sun becomes
A late riser
as winter sets in
And, it goes to bed early

That’s SAD
And, our mood swings
Like a pendulum
Causing depression

What with Clouds
And dense fog
Spreading gloom
All over the place?

Only bright sunlight
Can bring back
Light into our lives
And melt away
The winter blues

Failure

The pinnacle
Of success lies
At the top
Of the staircase

And,
Failure
Keeps plotting…
To climb down
The stairs
Between
My efforts
And
My achievements!

Earthquake

EARTHQUAKE

The earth shook violently…
Everyone rushed out of their homes
And took shelter in the open!

One man
Kept sleeping
And, snoring
Amidst chaos
And, confusion
Created by the earthquake

For him,
It was like the ‘mother earth’
Rocking the son of her soil
In the cradle
And, singing lullaby to him!

What the Stars Foretell

Here I am
Grounded on earth
And, my fate
Hangs in the stars

My future
Is predicted by people
Who are unsure
Of their own fate

For them,
It is profitable business—
They have absolutely
Nothing at stake

All they have to do
Is to play with my anxiety
And, I am sure
To shell out nickels

The astrologers
Tell you,
“What the stars foretell”
Or, so they say!

The Setting Sun

Everyone
Worships
The rising Sun…
But,
Once
I bowed
Before a setting Sun
And saluted him!
I offered
My prayers
And vowed
Obeisance to him
The moment
He rose again,
He rushed
To my door
And,
Promised
To shine on me
Forever!
Since then,
I have spent
My days
And, nights
In the glory
Of bright Sunlight!
Since then,
I have never seen
The darkness of night!

Hasty Conclusions

My friend
Sent me a message
And asked me
To take a look at it!

I tore open
The envelope,
Emptied the content,
Spread it on my table

Then, I called my friend
And, yelled at him
‘That Was a blank paper
You sent me…”

If only I had turned
The page over,
I would have seen
What he told me…

That the message
Was on the other side!
Our life
Is full of such hasty conclusions!

The Second Spring

Rain came down in torrents—
The parched earth
Rose to greet her…
And let off some steam!
You took a long time in coming—
I was almost roasted alive
Complained the parched earth
Oh, the mountains fell in love with me
They blocked my way—
I had to take a circuitous route to reach you
The winds blew me hither and thither
I lost my way on my way!
But now that I am here
Pray, tell me, ‘What can I do for you?’
Oh, I have been thirsty for months
The leaves on the trees
Are heavy with dust
I need a thorough wash
I have been keenly waiting
For the monsoon season
So that I may have a natural bath
‘Monsoon is not a season’
Corrected the rain
There are only two seasons—
Summer and winter
Monsoon is just a transitory phase
Between summer and winter
Just as spring is a transitory phase
Between winter and summer
People wear summer clothes
And winter clothes
They don’t wear spring clothes
Or monsoon clothes
If there is rain during summer,
They wear raincoats over summer clothing
Just as they do in winter
Fresh leaves appear during monsoon
Flowering plants and trees are abloom
Animals and birds mate before monsoon
Just as they do
Before the arrival of spring
Monsoon is a second opportunity for rejuvenation
Just as spring is…
In fact, it is a second spring!
