Black and White

Life as a child was full of hues,
Of sparkling reds and brightened blues,
‘Coz the distinction of color had not been made,
The foundation of racism had not been laid.

However, things began to change as we grew,
‘Coz Black & White became the only colors we knew,
Makeba was no more the cheerful & witty girl,
Nor Mary the blue-eyed blonde with a curl.

We began to be known as blacks and whites,
Being distinguished by the racism termites,
Into colors that seemed superfluous,
In the face of love & friendship that held us.

Doesn’t pitch black turn into a shade of grey,
When white and black decide to play,
Then why confine ourselves by shades and hues,
Let all colors in the cup of life brew.

Come let’s extract the flavor of love,
Let’s make way for the peace dove,
And create a world of beautiful shades,
Where Makeba & Mary are tied in a common braid.

I Wish I Could

Never before had I thought,
In the war of words I shall be caught,
And my life would face a love drought,
Just because one day I couldn’t speak out.

The days of misery and guilt would have ended then & there,
Life in the present would have seemed much fair,
Only if I could have opened my heart out,
And confessed my love for her with a shout.

But the societal ties and moral values,
Would have asked me to pay the dues,
For confessing love at the cost of betrayal,
And for choosing a path against the love manual.

So, here I am regretting each day of my life,
For the love of a girl who could have been my wife,
Guess that’s what you call the beauty of fate,
It’s always better to speak out before it’s too late!!

The Naked Truth

Behind the mighty structures of brick and stone,
Are the naked hands of people who stand alone,
Fighting against all odds through the sun & rain,
Until the last drop of their energy drains.

A group of faceless people lacking urbanity,
Yet striving each day for their pride and vanity,
To build castles of dream for their family & kids,
So they don’t have to suffer, the way they themselves did.

With tanned, battered bodies and soiled sores,
They are forever ready to take on more,
Only to earn enough to make ends meet,
And manage a jhuggi on the narrow street.

No matter how often they drop to the ground,
With illness or by exhaustion downed,
The hope of a bright new day in their eyes,
Makes them rub off the dust and rise.

No matter if they have to stay miles apart,
From friends & families so dear to their heart,
The lamp of hope within them is always alive,
The grit of a labor isn’t dead till they die.

Mr Ugly

There comes Mr. Ugly again,
With his long tongue sticking out,
He walks with a sway of his hind,
‘though his hind is quite stout!

He makes a very stupid sound,
As that of the ticking of a clock,
His smile shows not a single teeth,
His face seems as if he mocks.

He wakes with the rising of the sun,
And walks the whole day long,
It seems he is never tired,
Quite swiftly he moves along.

He comes to see me everyday,
And that’s the moment I fear,
’cause sometimes out of happiness,
He comes quite close & near.

Whether it is his happiness,
Or his curiosity to know me,
I’m still quite unable to understand,
His sight just makes me pee!

Some call him “Mr. Ugly“,
Others refer as the ‘fat bastard’,
Who else can it be,
But, our very own ‘Mr. Lizard‘.

You Are Mine

With you I smile, in your arms I cry,
Through your eyes I can see my dreams fly high,
You have taught me to sing in pain and tears,
You have given me the strength to conquer my fears.

You beheld my hand & showed me the way,
How life could be led the happy way,
With you I could have my problems at bay,
In your strong arms I wish I could, forever lay.

The day we met, my life took a turn.
The ugly memories of my past seem to forever burn,
In the smothering fire of my present joy,
Where each moment with you I seemed to enjoy.

Your first love call, that different feel,
Made me fall for you head over heel,
The world now seemed a different shade,
I believed for each other we were made.

That first kiss, the way you cuddled my face,
Ohh! How you caused my heart to race,
Every time your hands felt me around,
Every time in my ears you whispered a sound.

You held my hand in your hand so tight,
That life’s problems began to seem light,
You taught me to love with all my heart,
You became my inseparable part.

I was happy or sad every time you could tell,
You where there for me each time I fell,
You surrendered your heart and stole mine,
Your love intoxicated me like some old wine.

I Need You Mom

As I stand on the threshold of a new phase of life,
And my hormones begin on that internal strife,
I want you to be my guiding source of light,
To help me choose between the wrong & right.

I may at times forget to express my love for you,
Being too busy struggling with life’s blues,
But I want you to know that you still mean the world,
And your warm lap still lures me for a cozy curl.

When I ask you to go outside the door,
That’s exactly when I need you more,
So step back & pull me in the warmth of your arms,
Wash away my worries with your motherly charms.

Understand me during those terrible days,
When my mood seems to play in weird ways,
When it’s hard to bear the frustration and pain,
You’re the only one to save me from becoming insane.

Hold your patience when I ask to be left alone,
Or when I wish to spend some time with my phone,
It’s just my way of solving my inner conflicts,
Understand that there are things I need to fix.

The pressure to choose between wrong and right,
Pushes my heart and mind into a constant fight,
That’s when I want you to take control,
To bring some respite to my burning soul.

I may not be the world’s best daughter,
But for you it shouldn’t really matter,
As long as I still yearn to be close to you,
And we share the closeness of grass and dew.

When the whole world seems to be against me,
And I start feeling like a misfit in life’s sea,
I want you to bring solace to my inner qualm,
Believe me, when I say I Need You Mom.

Coz You Are a Women

Early to rise and late to bed,
Weaving threads of life under your shed,
You create a home inside the walls of a house,
You are the ultimate pillar of strength for your spouse.

The warmth of your lullaby can put a child to sleep,
The power of your love can make even the devil weep,
You are clothed in class & elegance from head to toe,
Your vibrancy can shy away even the moon’s glow.

A small moment of happiness can make you smile,
A single word of motivation can push you to cross miles,
You can face challanges with a lion’s pride,
You have the courage to take the world in your stride.

You have crossed the oceans, you have captured skies,
You have helped the blind see through your eyes,
You can fly without wings and be fiercely wild,
And yet you can carry the innocence of a young child.

A pilot, a banker, your ambitions fly high,
You can also be a charmer for that perfect guy,
‘Coz your feminity inhabits both heart and mind,
You have their separate duties well outlined.

You are like a bouquet of fragrant flowers,
A miracle lady with unknown powers,
Who can free a frightened soul from his fears,
And help a distressed man smile through tears.

You leave a bit of sparkle wherever you go,
You remain undeterred with life’s sweet sour blows,
That’s what makes you a women of grit & steel,
You can cause the biggest wounds of life to heal.

From the day of your birth until your moment of death,
You strive to live for others until your last breath,
That’s what makes you so special and prized,
‘Coz you are an angel in a women’s disguise.

Break the Silence

The words kept escaping her bruised lips,
And the tide of time kept lashing her like a whip,
As the deaf walls echoed them back,
Causing her sweet sad memories to play in flashback.

She remembered the day they had first met,
How he had caused her heart to play the love roulette,
And she had agreed to fly with him without wings,
Without asking him in return a single thing.

The day they had walked down the blessed aisle,
With a promise to cover endless miles,
Loving each other from the bottom of their hearts,
Waiting eagerly for their perfect love story to start.

Their love had seemed to grow with each passing day,
Life seemed to have blessed them in the sweetest way,
But, in came rolling the rotten seed of fate,
Creating a wall of difference for the soul-mates.

His love calls & whispers were replaced by shouts,
His promise of a lifetime seemed doomed by doubts,
No more could he stand her in the eye,
His love for her seemed to forever die.

The praises where replaced by blames & insults,
He seemed to have entered a different cult,
Where women were considered mere puppets,
While the men could blow their chivalry trumpets.

It was still fine until the final day,
When he had burnt the last straw of hay,
By lashing her body black and blue,
And giving humanity a final adieu.

It took her years to discover the devil of domestic violence,
That had long prevailed under his disguised opulence,
Those beautiful woes & promises of a lifetime,
Seemed like a distant dream in face of his crime.

Never had she thought it would end this way,
That her life would become so miserable one day,
The man she had made her inseparable part,
Would be the one to hit her with the poison dart.

As she lay there at the threshold of death,
A sigh of regret scarring her every single breath,
She knew it was time to break the silence,
And forever shatter the glass of domestic violence.

When Words Are Not Enough

I tried my best to let you know,
Of feelings of discomfort I was going through,
But each time you managed to catch me off guard,
And leave my dignity completely charred.

I could feel your prowling eyes consuming me,
Scanning me right down from head to knee,
As if I were some priced showpiece,
That you could salvage with your masterpiece.

What made you think I was ready for it?
Was it my silence or my friendly spirit?
Or were they my sleeveless tops & short skirts?
That gave you the default license to flirt.

Each time you tried to make an advance,
I made it a point to maintain a normal stance,
To save your dignity from getting charred,
And save you from forever getting barred.

But with time I have come to realize,
That my silence gives people reasons to analyze,
My own character and consent in the act,
Without trying to know the actual fact.

And thus today I seek to speak out,
It’s time for me to break the seed and sprout,
Time to react and become really tough,
‘Coz mere words are not enough!!

Thanks For Lighting Up My Dark World

I can still remember the innocence of your face,
Cupped by your hair like soft strands of lace,
And those little pink fingers gently curled,
Thanks for lighting up my dark world.

That twinkle of happiness in your eyes,
As you saw my face after your loud cries,
Those tiny drops of tears like glittering pearls,
Thanks for lighting up my dark world.

I remember those long & sleepless nights,
When putting you to sleep was a constant fight,
How I loved to see you drift into a dreamworld,
Thanks for lighting up my dark world.

How I loved to see you grow old each day,
Touching other’s lives in your own special way,
While your own little world around me swirled,
Thanks for lighting up my dark world.

The day you took your first baby step,
How I swelled with pride with every footstep,
I danced, I jumped with happiness I swirled,
Thanks for lighting up my dark world.

With each passing day you are growing old,
Filling up my life with memories to forever hold,
Golden memories with your presence impearled,
Thanks for lighting up my dark world.
