Footprints

We all leave footprints
where ever we go
some are easily seen
some barely show
With the passage of time
some will fade away
while others will last
until your dying day
They show the wear on your shoes
and how heavy your load
where you've come from
and the direction you go
You cannot choose
where your path begins
and have little control
over how it will end
What matters most
is the choices you make
how far you travel
and the road you take
Whether they last forever
or quickly fade
that others are better
for the footprints you made

Like a Child

Live life like a child
take joy in each new day
be happy with the little things
don't worry what others say

Don't take joy from a child
don't take their dreams away
when their imagination takes flight
listen to what they say

When a child cries or shouts
it's not always right or wrong
not stubborn but maybe broken
because they're not that strong

Think about what they've been through
consider where they are
cold rules and expectations
can only go so far

Open your mind and listen
then answer from your heart
so lessons learned will resonate
even when you're far apart

Don't be so hard, don't be so tough
let the love inside you show
your kindness just might touch someone
that you don't even know

Angry words they hurt so much
and can never be unsaid
in the silence they can haunt you
and stay inside your head

So be careful what you say
and let your anger go
it's not so complicated
not much you need to know

Give a little of yourself
ease another's load
love one another
is all you need to know

Always

From the day that he was born
He meant the world to me
I said I'd always be there
That i would never leave

Someone to hold his hand
Someone to lead the way
To tuck him in each night
And be there every day

He said it's just the two of us
It's always you and me
Thats the way it always was
How it's supposed to be

But changes come and go
It's just a part of life
Too young to understand
He just knows that it's not right

How do i make him understand
How can i make him see
The way it always was
Can now no longer be

You say it's for the best
But is that really true
Every minute that you're gone
Is a minute that you lose

Is it really worth it
Is it what you need to do
If he gains the world
But loses part of you

Choices hard and full of pain
So think before you act
Because precious moments lost
Are never coming back

Chains

Why did i give my heart away
when i was so young
why didn't i know better
my life had just begun
But something so easily given
is not so easy to return
a fact that life has taught me
a lesson i have learned
Now shackled in these chains
i've put upon myself
down this path i've chosen
to follow someone else
I hear freedom calling
how i love the sound
from the darkness that surrounds me
down this road i'm bound
Now my sight is turned inside myself
to see who i've become
innocence lost forever
for someone still so young

I didn't want to do it
but did i really have a choice?
that gaining freedom for myself
meant hurting someone else
Time heals wounds
at least that's what they say
but it doesn't really matter
i could see no other way
Now my life is so much better
free from all those chains
to go anywhere i choose
my heart is mine again
