Marissa Martin Poem
You are what you eat my mother said as she tucked me in at night
I am what I eat mother and believed it with all my might
I always ate a balanced breakfast, lunch, and dinner
In constant hope that I would become thinner
This idea followed me throughout school
And how those kids could be so cruel
They would always ask me why I ate what I ate
I would reply that only these foods gave me a satiated state
In college I lived a life of isolation
trying to hide my true motivation
I watched all my peers go out and have fun
and sometimes wished my life could be redone
Eventually I found what I had been missing
Which I still find myself reminiscing
After my graduation I found a place
Off the wall, dark, and full of space
I also got an office job that offered me the night shift
Which turned out to be such a wonderful gift
A few others worked with me during the night
and they were always so very polite
One day I invited three over to my house
For a fun little game of cat and mouse
I remember when they first arrived
It took them by such a surprise
When I revealed my true motive for this little soiree
That they were all my delicious prey
They all tried to run and yell for help
but I overpowered them, hearing a yelp
From the young woman I had sliced in the gut
as the others realized all doors were sealed shut
One by one I killed them quickly
And thanked them silently and a smile spread thickly
Across my face and I thought of the balanced
diet I had always embraced
As I cut up and packaged all the meat
I remembered the words "I am what I eat"
