The Enemy Within

The Enemy Within
Who wins when the fight is between you and yourself?
How can you tell when it’s over with a trophy on the shelf?
Who gets the medal? Who comes in first?
When all that you’re doing just means that it hurts?
How can you shake hands, call it a draw, and each go their own way
When neither one can leave because both will have to stay?
Go to your corners, come out swinging, each hoping their side wins
All the while they’re knowing to forfeit before it begins.
The Bible says to love your enemies
And I believe that to be true
Even in those crazy times
When your enemy is you.

Insomnia

Insomnia

The sun is peeking over the horizon
A new day to begin
I get up to open the curtain
To let the sunlight in

A bird is chirping outside my window
Tweeting a morning song
And I find myself humming
Just trying to sing along

My mind begins to work,
With thoughts, but none too deep
And I really can’t help but wonder
“WHY CAN’T I GET TO SLEEP?”

Hey Dad

Hey Dad Hey Dad, do you wanna go shoot or maybe throw a ball? Hey Dad, do you see how much I’ve grown? Betcha you’ll never guess how tall. Hey Dad, look I got an ‘A’, just like you said I would! Hey Dad, you know I studied extra hard this time and it really turned out good. Hey Dad, did you see me get that hit? I swung really, really hard. Hey Dad, can we go mow the grass? It’s getting tall there in the yard. Hey Dad, can you watch me do this flip? I’ve been practicing every day. Hey Dad, I just want to be like you in each and every way. Hey Dad, I’m getting older and might be home a little late. Hey Dad, it’s okay, you don’t have to worry, watch and wait. Hey Dad, I’ve finally picked a college, I’ll be starting in the fall. Hey Dad, it’s going to be great, don’t you know I’ll have a ball! Hey Dad, I’ve met a real nice girl, I think that she could be the one. Hey Dad, I might end up getting married when graduation’s finally done. Hey Dad, seems like it’s been forever, just thought I’d call you and say ‘Hi’. Hey Dad, yeah the kids are doing great, so for now I’ll say ‘goodbye’. Hey Dad, you know we need to get together, seems like it’s been a while. Hey Dad, how about you come and see us? We’d love to see your smile. Hey Dad, I just wanted to say ‘thanks’ for everything you did. Hey Dad, can we go throw the ball again, and pretend like I’m a kid?

Want

Want
I want to be right more than I’m wrong
I want to lead and not just get along
I want to be happy more than I’m sad
I want to be good more than I’m ever bad
I want to be looked at with some kind of respect
I want to surprise everyone as more than they’d expect
I want to be thought of as a special kind of friend
I want to be loved and cared for until the very end
I want to give love and not care about the results
I want to receive compliments much more than insults
I want to be me more than anybody else
I want to accept others so they can be themselves
I want to be rich, but I know money's not the way
I want to count all of my blessings each and every day
I want my team to win, but surely won’t die if they lose
I want to make my choices and be content with what I choose
I want to be in the present and live just for today
I want to desire a future and let the past go on its way

Nature's Peace

Nature’s Peace
There’s music in the snowfall
And lyrics on the breeze
Singing to me in words
That put my mind at ease
There’s a peace among the trees
When the wind is moving through
And the leaves rustle in unison
As only nature can do
There’s a warmth in the sunshine
Even on a winter’s day
That can settle a troubled heart
And push all the cares away
Just sit and listen
To all God has created
And let it put you at peace
As it’s appreciated

A Difference

A Difference
A young boy stood there, arms folded, without a care,
When up walked an old man, wrinkled face, white hair.
They studied each other closely, the wheels turning in each,
And the old man thought, “There’s a lesson here to teach.”
So a question he did ask, already knowing the proper reply,
“What would you make if you had only one try?”
The young lad stood straighter, as if challenged to fight,
And decided that a quick answer just wouldn’t be quite right.
So he thought, with a furrowed brow, and a long minute ensued.
Then the words came forth for the answer he’d construed.
“It would need to be big, so that everyone could see.
That would be a reminder, and they would all think of me.
I’d put my name on the side, lit up in letters big and bold,
So that, to future generations, my story could always be told.”
Then he leaned against the wall, with a smirk upon his face
And the thought inside his head, “I’ve put that old man in his place.”
The old man looked wistfully, contemplating the lad’s supposed win.
Then his eyes lit up and on his face there came a grin.
“Young man, that’s a good answer, but sadly you’ve missed the mark.
For you see, buildings will one day fall and bright lights will soon be dark.
So if you had only one try to make something of any substance,
You should take that attempt and use it to try and make a difference.”

Lingering

Lingering

Death, it lingers, just out of sight
Like a cold, lonely shadow in the dark of the night
We want to ignore it, but try as we might
Death, it still lingers.

Death, it lingers, and we turn our face
In hopes that it's wrong and not bound for our place
But, alas, there it stands, in its own little space
Death, it still lingers.

Death, it lingers, and can't be outrun
Finally arriving like a last setting sun
Whether young or old when our time is done
Death, it still lingers.

Death, it lingers, but make no mistake
There's nothing to add and nothing to take
When Death comes a'knocking and us it does shake
Death, it still lingers.

Death, it lingers, as we live our life
And it comes to remind us it's sharp as a knife
As one day it will pull us from all of the strife
Death, it still lingers.

Death, it lingers, but don't live in fear
Because it's always around and always quite near
It just there to remind us of what's the most dear
As Death, it still lingers

When Five Ends

When Five Ends
My son turned five a few days back,
And as with most kids his age, the questions don’t lack.
He came in one day and looked up at me,
And innocently asked, “When five ends, what'll I be?”
I looked at him close and answered him straight
“After five, comes six, then seven and eight”.
He thought for a minute and then said with a smile,
“Wow, that'll be great, I’ll be eight in a while”.
As he ran off to play, I sat there in thought,
And then the question came up, “Is that what I taught?”
So I called him back and said “Son, let me see,
I don’t think I mentioned how cool five can be.
Did you know you could eat an ice cream cone,
And still tell your age with one hand alone?
You don’t need to stop and show them two hands,
But just hold up five fingers, and they understand.
Soon sticks won’t be guns, swords and bats and such,
They’ll just be things that aren’t thought of so much.
Bugs aren't the same at ten as they are when you're five,
Because the whole world is new, and seems more alive.
How many teens do you know who still want to fly,
While at five you’re still willing to give it a try?
How many eight year olds go and move truckloads of dirt,
And never think twice about getting hurt?
Now, there’s cool things to come, don’t get me wrong
But something about five helps life move along.
Don’t rush it on by and reach for the eight,
When just being five is something so great.
Yeah, it’s eighteen to vote and sixteen to drive,
But it’s never as cool as just being five.
So, to answer your question, don’t wish it away,
There’s much to be said for just living today.
True, five will soon end, and then we move on,
But enjoy five right now before it’s all gone.”

Getting Older

Getting Older
We’re all getting older. That, we know, is true
And there’s just no way to stop it, no matter what we do
So remember the next time you get a new ache or new hurt
At least you woke up this morning on the right side of the dirt

Me

Me
I’ve been on both sides of the ledger
Debits and credits have both been made.
I’ve seen my light shine brightly
And I’ve also seen it fade.
I’ve lived life to the fullest
Like there were no regrets
But then found myself asking,
‘Is this as good as it gets?’
I’ve had people who looked up to me
While others they’ve looked down
I’ve made many smile and laugh
And still others I’ve made frown.
I’ve learned to live life quietly
Yet sometimes I want to scream
I’ve accepted what’s reality
But still I want to dream
There are secrets I’ve kept hidden
So what you get is what you see
I guess it all comes down to this
All I’ve ever been is me.
