Being Honest

Shocking as it may seem to believe,
I dislike iTunes Christian and gospel genre.
The only explanation I can fathom,
Is that all its songs sound the same to me.

My preference is hip hop and pop,
Lecrae and Andy Mineo are my tops.
I do like Ariana when listening to pop,
Mostly I rock to the Apple’s pop.

I love J. Cole’s “Brackets” so much,
I even wrote about it for my class.
So much truth exposed in the song,
It’s impossible to ignore the message.

My focus effects my reality,
I keep Jesus as my centerpiece.
Without him, a me there wouldn’t be,
Connected like the roots of a tree.

Injustice

So many Americans think,
For us to truly succeed,
We must be an athlete.
With eyes on the black men,
They all assume we must,
Have good ball skills.

We have more abilities,
Than good sports agility.
We are not here to cause,
Problems and wreck the peace.
We just want our voices heard,
But instead they are ignored.

No matter where we are,
We just don’t belong.
We are always seen as,
Doing something wrong.
Whether walking on the street,
Or going to Starbucks to meet.

I hope there comes a day,
When we’re treated the same.
When we’re judged by actions,
Rather than as a distraction.
No matter what people say,
Discrimination has not gone away.

Focus

Staying focused is a mindset,
Take your time one step at a time.
Find your flow and go with it,
Think positive and don't ruin it.

The process is real and the drive is strong
If you stay focused on living out your dream,
Then you will take the steps
You need to reach success.

Going, going, gone you've been running
All along just stay focused on the mission.
No matter how challenging the roads are ahead,
Don't turn away from obstacles blocking your way.

Focus on your mission, not on your position.
No one is looking to see where you started,
They look to see where you're going.
Don't lose hope and travel away.
Tough times are up ahead,
Keep moving you’re on your way!

Overlooked

The things you don't do shine so bright
Like flashlight in the middle of the night.
The things you do well blend in like,
Camouflage in the shadows of others light.

Your hard work is barely seen,
Hiding your stress behind the scenes.
Always confronted about the things
That everyone sees.
You barely hear a positive thing.
At times it feels as if
You're living out a bad dream.

Never though this feeling would last so long,
Feels like a roller coaster going on and on.
No stopping point nearby,
So you stay in one place a cry.
Missing a shoulder to lean on
Wishing someone was there to lean on.

Blending in like camouflage
And no one knows where to find you.
People stare you straight in the face,
Yet they don't see your face.

The things you don't do shine so bright
Like flashlight in the middle of the night.
The things you do well blend in like
Camouflage in the shadows of others light.

Working hard in the dark,
In the light you miss the mark.
Like shooting blanks at a target
Or grocery shopping with empty pockets.

It doesn't add up, when you actually try,
No one's around to cheer you on.
When you make a mistake,
You can't catch a break.
When the pressures on you feel the heat
This is your chance to really speak.

So ready to prove yourself, take a step of faith
Every eye is on you standing in the spotlight.
But then you make a mistake,
And all eyes turn away;
Laughing as everyone walks away.

The things you don't do shine so bright
Like flashlight in the middle of the night.
The things you do well blend in like,
Camouflage in the shadows of others light.

She's Coming

Not meant to be alone forever,
Someone special is reserved for me.
I have the eyes of a machine, x-ray,
Color is society’s impenetrable gateway.

I want a woman I can be real with,
She appreciates me like she gets.
I pray she will be patient with me,
Being verbally open is hard to be.

Ecstatic to have a family of my own,
A foreshadowed dream in my mind.
My wife will change me in ways unseen,
I will be changed from who I used to be.

No roads are the same, only similar,
We will meet face to face I pray.
We each have our own path in life,
I pray one day I will have a wife.

Christ Gave Me Life

You knocked me down once
And Christ gave me life;
Knock me down again
And I'll just get up twice.

Eight minutes no heartbeat,
Not sound asleep just lacking the breath that I need.
Family surrounding me is this the end for me,
I know I'll make it through and this is not my que.

I'm righteous in Christ and he resurrects life.
So Satan you have no power over me,
Take your hands off my life I'm unashamed and free,
God picked me to be a miracle for everyone to see.

Medical staff said I would be handicapped.
Like I would be behind bars and trapped,
In a condition where I refuse to adapt.
You can't stop me now, your plans can't harm me now,
I'm equipped and ready for the next round.

You thought you had me at one time,
Stealing? That's a crime, I refuse to give up,
Jesus empowered me to get up.
You messed with the wrong one,
I am the king's son.

All my challenges and battles have already been won.
Now step down, and get on the ground,
You're defeated, and there is nothing more for you.
Your power has been depleted.
He rescued me, saved my life,
And set me free, so thank you Christ.

You knocked me down once
And Christ gave me life;
Knock me down again
And I'll just get up twice.

Motivation

Believe in yourself,
Never doubt yourself.
This is not the time to
second guess yourself.

Everyone needs a push some way,
Maybe a good word of the day.
Be driven by your desire to dream,
And your passion to succeed.

Like a chest full of wealth,
See the treasure within yourself.
Form a plan and follow it through,
With your wrist and arms
Like your shooting hoops.

Find someone whom you trust
To pull you up when get stuck.
Looking back is not the way,
Motivation is all you need
To make it through anything.

American Hate

The Asian community is scrutinized,
Blacks are killed and cuffed on the street.
You’ll order Pei-Wei and Big Bowl,
Then scope them out, target practice.

The very people arresting blacks,
They are protected by their acts.
But America doesn’t see a uniform,
They only see black and say wrong.

America is so resistant to change,
Failing to admit that their slogan’s fake.
America calls itself the land of the free,
The constant racism could have fooled me.

We can’t sleep in peace for Breonna,
For George Floyd, we got it right.
Justice is still so seldom served,
Living freely is what we deserve.

Darkness

Too much is on my mind and
It's haunting me like a bad dream.
Making it tough to sleep and,
When I'm wake when it's effecting me.
A form of fear that won't let go of me.

I wish I could run away,
But it catches up to me
And latches on with authority.
It makes me mad that no one understands me.
Imagine speaking to a deaf person,
Who doesn't know how to read?
Or walking blind with no one to lead.

I'd hate to find out what they really say,
With heads turned the opposite way.
Talking in code like reading hieroglyphics,
I need someone to rescue me from my insecurity.
I hate what stress is doing in me,
I'm in a dark place and it's killing me;
I hate what stress is doing in me.

Whether staring at my eye lids,
Or Eyes wide open in the dark;
It all looks the same,
The color pitch black is all around.

I'm trying to keep myself,
Together and in check.
Great at balancing many tasks,
Without really breaking a sweat.
At times it can become too much
Like overloading a circuit with too many plugs.
Overpowered and burned out,
I need someone to help me out.

The fear of being alone and stranded,
Has got me lost looking for answers.
The weight of fear is falling heavy now,
The colors of death are clear now;
Help me turn away from my path,
Before I go too far on this track.

Holiday

Time to pull out the gift wrap,
Bring out the ribbons and crafts.
Red, yellow, green and blue,
Christmas time is here for you.

Santa’s sleigh and reindeer are set,
Gifts and presents are all prepped.
Eggnog cartons surround the store,
Candy canes and glitter light the floor.

This is the best time of the year,
The stocking hanging season is here.
Excited to see all the facial expressions,
Gifts are opened with love and affection.

I hope and pray that no matter where,
Everyone has a blessed holiday out there.
The greatest gift above any and all,
Is the birth of Jesus Christ for us all.
