You Never Heard Me

When I was a little girl, you used to be my whole world
I hung on every word you spoke, convinced that the truth you wouldn’t cloak
But sometimes I’d catch you in a lie, and sometimes I’d sit down and cry
But you never heard me.

When I was old enough to know, some gifts were real, some for show
I didn’t just want your money, or words as sweet as honey
I just wanted you to notice, I thought those gifts were bogus
But you never heard me.

When I was old enough to understand, the difference between a boy and man
I wanted to get your advice, for you to say I didn’t need guys
Something else always had your attention, still, I’d come to you with all my questions
But you never heard me.

When I was old enough to see, that you cared more for beer than me
It broke my heart in so many ways, to watch you drink away your days
I would ask you to put the bottle down; to notice your kids, to turn around
But you never heard me.

And yet, here we are today; I want you to hear what I say
I’m on my knees, begging you please; you aren’t just killing you, you’re killing me
Out of all the words I spoke, of all the tears I’ve choked
You never heard me.

I’m old enough, I’m not blind, you’re dying ahead of your time
And nothing I say, would mean a thing. And nothing I’d do, could make you change
You didn’t only drink away your life; every time you drank, you took a part of mine
No matter how long, no matter how short, I’ll keep trying, I’ll be the good sport
Cause no matter how many times you never heard me
No matter how much it hurts,
 You’re still my daddy.
