Giving Thanks

Thank you for my daughter’s laughter
she reminds me there is joy to be found everywhere
thank you for arms that embrace
life’s yearning to connect
thank you for dreams
the ones we follow
and the ones we dance with
Thank you for music
the kind that cracks you open
then puts you back together again
thank you for the ink of our memories
so that we may write
our own beauty
thank you for the sky
a window wide open
calling you in
thank you for the ocean
its vastness humbling
waves that whisper
let go… let go…
thank you for the wind
that partners with the trees
for a soulful ballet
thank you for the rain
washing away the dust
and tampering our fires
thank you for springs vibrant bloom
a canopy of magic and renewal
thank you for summers swell
thick sweet honey humming with heat
thank you for autumns release
unfurling itself against a palette of color
thank you for winters deep sleep
and the stillness of snow
thank you for all the darkness
the despair
the fear
and the losses
for without them
all of this
would not be
so achingly
beautiful

Imperfection

Early mornings

remind me of memories

not yet made

my cup of coffee

like a warm embrace

steam rising

against the optimism

of a blue sky

I am a women

inadequately defined

there are the bold lines

the ones that trace the contours of my skin

deep grooves

against my being

mother

companion

friend

but underneath the muscle and sinew

of my tactile reality

lies the deep blue of my blood

untouched

constantly moving

the solid fragments of bone and marrow

forging an alliance with my heartbeat

I still have yet to sit here

within the dark spaces

and love

the fearsome silence

I still avert my eyes

to the sight

of my own abundant flesh

the valleys

of my own opulence

refusing to accept this body

the way it is

and the way it was

beautiful

in all its blaring imperfections

my skin stretched

and pillaged

remnants

from a battle bravely won.

Fortitude

Within the definitions of myself
there have been
So many years
spent running
searching for meaning
hidden in the cracks
hidden in the eyes of others
and as I watch my flesh grow soft
made tame
with the revolution
of giving life
my mind
in repose
I go to you once more
young child
as you walked upon the fire
hot coals against a dark desert sky
asking for strength
did you find it?
is strength
not in the holding onto things
but in the letting go?
for I am just a body
composed of secrets
hidden beneath my blood
the rush of whispers
in my ear
while my heart
a trembling bird
shuffles in her cage
wings outstretched
ready to take flight
time has no meaning to her
she does not grow weary
with the weight of gravity
she dreams of renewal
patient
and eternal

Breath

My breath
speaks to the silence
hidden portraits of myself
among the clutter
pull me out
and stretch me open
upon this multitude of sky
I am a courageous soul
bound to the tethers
of my own fear
aren’t we all?
why must we shut the doors
lock them tight at night?
what freedom there brings
in standing naked
among people
your people
our people
we are a tribe
of lovers
and givers
freedom soul shakers
who have only perhaps forgotten
our roots
our footsteps in the sand
where we once danced together
around the fires.
