Us

Time- a measurement done in the labs at the University--
We two, young, immortal, vibrant felt no time.
Grasping each other tightly as the world spun in space
We floated into the future
You-me as one- reassuring who we were

You drifted into a world I never could know
I remained in that space familiar to me-
Now, we are not we but you and I
Without thoughts of immortality-

I in khakis lost in a desert stung by an unknown
Fall into the sand reaching for you
Can you hear me?
Do you remember me?

I have never left you
Bring me home and do not mourn
For our love is like that river moving to a greater place
Into a future time of you/me

Memphis Farewell

I remember you standing high above that big muddy river
The wind dancing with your soft white cotton dress
Revealing tanned straight legs standing on green summer grass
The golden sun dripped into your fiery hair as the shadows of
Dusk silently approached
I watched you, a picture of innocence, of unreality
As the evening grew long shadows you turned and smiled
It was the last time we were together

Paris Evening

Afternoon slips into early evening
Cafes fill
Daylight hides in soft shadows
Outdoor tables wait
Couples slip into seats, order
Sitting, watching people
Chatter fills the air
Supper comes and goes
Patrons slip away into the coming night
Arm in arm, head resting upon welcome shoulder
Paris seems to smile at night in the spring
After chocolate mousse desserts

Parisian Night

Parisian nights magical made for hand in hand walking
Along the light sparkling Seine,
Across bridges running to old left bank enclaves
Magic nights soft city lights
Footsteps echo into alleys
Taxis purr catlike in misty morning dew
Who walks in these early hours just before dawn?
Bakers rolling croissants, freshly baking
Deliveries of flowers, papers, breads
All in sleepy just light …
You and I, hand in hand, find our way home
Under flowering purple trees

Despair

Mid-Summer- hot, no cooling breeze
Bodies wilt like tired leaves
Dogs lie panting in shade caves

Man walks slowly, head down
Heading down dusty road out of town
Face carved by time into a frown

Thinking ‘bout times past
Wife left, she couldn’t last
Children followed, moved out fast

It was the whisky chased them away
Cussing and yelling fighting every day
Hit her one late night in early May

Morning came, breakfast served like nothing transpired
Went to work in them fields overly tired
Got home late, shack deserted

Note on the table with a loaf of bread
Don’t follow us wish you dead
Realization hit like a ton of lead

Reached for that flask kept on his hip
Put it to his lips to take a sip
Heard that voice no more, don’t slip

Into that fog again which brought you down
Now causing you to leave town
With you head down

Set fire to that shack
Flames heat your back
Nobody cuts you any slack

What if...you thought as you sat by a stream
Watching your life slip like a dream
Punctuated by a loud retort, no scream

You slipped into darkness away from the light
Into that final good night

Sand Dollars

Felt you next to me as we walked on the sand
laughing. Floppy stylish hat covering your golden locks, green
eyes smiling …
I reached for your hand
We walked down the beach seeking elusive
Sand dollars…finding three
Remember that first day of the year? Small treasures,
You were joyful-- then despondent --then joyful…
I had to go
Can’t spend sand dollars

Paschal Dawn

Earth slowly brings new light from night
Turning to face the day
Orchid sky reflects upon still water
Sparkling water gems
Birds wake calling softly
As new day is born
Rising sun gives joy to Rising son
This Paschal morning
Bringing hope to a faithless world….

Night Echo

Pale moon glows upon our silken sheets softly
My thoughts walk in memory
Remembering your gentle touch --
Lingering scents infuse my every breath
Your love embedded forever in my dreams --
Dark lonely days, empty evening arms
Your touch gone where I cannot go
Night stars play hide and seek on clouded eyes--
My steps echo in the night
Walking towards an unknown tomorrow.

Once

Once dragons flew freely in the skies
Magic ruled the earth
We lived in castles in the air
Hearts filled with love and joy
Causing us to be as one--
We learned from dragons
It is all right to fly
To distant lands across the roiling sea--
Above cloud covered lands we flew
On magic dragon ships
To the mountains of the moon-
Entering lands of mysterious night
Seeking that elusive light--
Our dragons breathed holy fire
Lighting caves hidden in the dark
Bringing warmth and love to earth…
A virgin land appeared before our eyes
Pristine forests, crystal waters--
Our dragons led the way
Forging pathways to the sea
Raising spires to the sun-
Abundance filled our prospering lives-
Until one day our Dragons magic faded
The land cried out
Our castles crumbled
The holy fire we had brought
Extinguished-
The caves were dark again –

Again

Wanted to touch you again
Your face
Your smile
Kiss your lips
Hold you close
Feel your softness
Again

Fourteen years--
Chemo
Radiation
Took you away from me--

I held you close
Limbs- frail
Face- radiant
Eyes deep dark
And then nothing--
