I Said a Prayer Today

Yes, I just want to let you know
I prayed for you today.
I prayed He'd keep you safe and send
His blessings down your way.
I prayed that God will meet your needs
And you'll always be glad.
May your heart be filled with joy.
May you be never sad.
I said a prayer for you today
And I know that God heard.
He knows I meant just what I said.
Yes, every single word.
I wish for all of you, my friends,
The very best in life.
That you don't encounter hardships,
No trouble, hurt, of strife.
I prayed that God will pull you through
If these things should arise
And that the Lord would comfort you
And wipe tears from your eyes.
I wish you all the very best
And may God light your way.
For all my friends from coast to coast,
I said a prayer today.

Instruments of God

October is Pastor Appreciation Month. So here is a poem I am writing for my pastor, Jeff Davenport of Calvary Baptist Church in Covington, KY
INSTRUMENTS OF GOD
It is the mouth that speaks the truth
From the pulpit ev'ry week.
It delivers words of wisdom
That all his followers seek.
They are the hands that raise God's word
Up high for all to see
As he brings us ev'ry sermon
And leads the victory.
They are the feet that walk the path
Of righteousness and grace
As he goes out to all the world,
Each big and tiny place.
It is the heart that answered when
A call from God went out.
He decided he would follow
And did without a doubt.
They are the eyes that see a need,
The heart that wants to help.
It is the mind that puts God first.
Oh yes, above all else.
These are the instruments of God.
He uses ev'ry one
To introduce the lonely, lost
To Jesus Christ, His Son.
He uses all these instruments
To make a lovely tune
So all of those who hear it may
Come running to Him soon.
I thank God for my pastor, yes,
He is so dear to me.
There'll never be another one
That's quite like him, you see.

Midnight Bus To Flagstaff

It was a cool October night
When I stepped on the bus.
As it pulled out of the station,
There were just twelve of us.
I made my way to the back seat,
Put my bags overhead,
Because the hour was getting late,
I had stretched out for bed.
I noticed then this older man
Just sitting five rows up.
He read a book as he drank from
His spill-proof coffee cup.
And then I saw the monogram
That both his bags had had.
It was the letters CAG
The same just like my dad.
As we rolled down the interstate,
All others were asleep.
I thought I'd introduce myself
And made it to his seat.
We talked 'bout politics and sports,
Whatever came to mind
As that midnight bus to Flagstaff
Went humming down the line.
We talked about mistakes we made
In our lives him and I.
And then at once, he got choked up,
A tear fell from his eye.
I asked him what was wrong, he said
"My one regret today
Is leaving, yes, my wife and son.
Just up and walked away.
I couldn't handle fatherhood.
It was too much for me.
So in the middle of the night,
I left my family. "
He said he wished he could go back
In time and do it right
As that midnight bus to Flagstaff
Just rolled on through the night.
He said he heard his wife had died
The year two thousand ten.
I thought how strange he would say that
'Cause that is the year when
I lost my mom, God rest her soul,
When I was just nineteen.
I only knew my father from
Old pictures I had seen.
He wished that he could find his son
And look him in the eyes
And with the most sincerest heart
To him apologize.
I asked him what his wife's name was
And then I was so glad
'Cause this man I was talking to
Turned out to be my dad.
Then I hugged him and he hugged me.
Our eyes filled up with tears.
We had a lot to catch up on
What we missed through the years.
Now that midnight bus to Flagstaff
Has a special meaning, see
'Cause that is where I found my dad
And where my dad found me.

Daddy, Please Don'T Hurt Me

Oh, Daddy, please don’t hurt me.

Don’t cause me any pain.

No, I don’t want to go through this

And cry these tears again.

Oh, Daddy, please don’t hurt me.

I love you, yes I do.

I don’t want to see this monster

That lives inside of you.

Oh, Daddy, please don’t hurt me.

I’ve gone through this enough.

I thought that you’d protect me from

Yes, all this type of stuff.

Oh, Daddy, please don’t hurt me.

I don’t want another bruise.

You turn into somebody else

When you start drinking booze.

Oh, Daddy, please don’t hurt me.

Don’t cause me any pain.

No, I don’t want to go through this

And cry these tears again.

Grandma's Angel Choir

My grandma neared her final breath
As she was laid in bed.
With all our fam’ly gathered ‘round,
These special words she said.
She said “I can see angels and
They’re waiting here for me.
Escort me home to Heaven, yes,
Is what they’ll do you see.”
She said that ev’ry one had held
A candle colored red.
As she’s going up to Heaven,
They’ll light her way she said.
As the members of the fam’ly then
Began to look around,
We could see no sign of them.
No, they could not be found.
She then began to say the names
Of ev’ry cherub there
As I sat right beside her in
That blue hospital chair.
I knew that time was coming fast
And it would be here soon.
But then the sound of singing had
Begun to fill the room.
It was the angel choir that
My grandma saw that day.
They were singing hymns of glory.
Sweet sounds in ev’ry way.
Then as she took her final breath
And tears filled up our eyes,
Our hearts were filled with sorrow, for
Our grandma dear had died.
’Twas then the sound of angels wings
Had fallen on our ears.
Though it was sad for us, you see,
My heart was filled with cheer.
For I then knew and I was glad
She’ll see unending days,
For that sweet angelic choir, yes,
Had carried her away.

The Fighting Game

“It’s all your fault!” they both exclaim

They’re at it once again.

My mom and dad are fighting mad

Just like they’ve always been.

See, he blames her and she blames him.

They’re both convinced they’re right.

They’re fighting from when I wake up

Until I sleep at night.

No, I don’t care whose wrong or right.

I only wish they’d cease

So we could have but just one night

Of ever loving peace.

Oh, can’t they see they’re hurting me?

When will they realize?

I wish that they could see themselves

By looking through my eyes.

No, I don’t care who’s right or wrong.

I don’t care who’s to blame.

I only wish my mom and dad

Would end this fighting game.

Oh Lord, I pray they’ll stop one day

And we can fin’lly be

A closely-knit and intertwined

And loving family.

If I Was Like An Eagle

Isiah 40:32

If I was like an eagle,

I’d soar across the sky.

I’d wing my flight to worlds unknown.

Across the stars I’d fly.

If I was like an eagle,

i’d glide the oceans blue,

I’d go up the highest mountain,

Down the lowest valley, too.

If I was like an eagle,

I’d fly off to a place

Where the is no sorrow,

Just joy on each face.

If I was like an eagle,

I would surely build a nest

Of things that mean the most to me

Because I’m truly blessed.

If I was like an eagle,

An angel I’d become

’Cause I would live in Heaven

With the Father and the Son.

Smile

Yes, every time I see your smile,
It lights my way through life.
It gives me strength to carry on
When all I face is strife.
It gives me peace when nothing else
Would ever seem to work.
Each time I see your gorgeous smile,
It eases all my hurt.
Yes, every time I see your smile,
In Heaven I must be
‘Cause I’ve just seen an angel and
She’s right in front of me.
There’s nothing like it on the earth
And won’t be for a while.
It picks me up when I fall down.
It is your lovely smile.

Kate and Julia

Oh, Kate comes from a broken home
Where life’s just not that good.
She wants so much to make it work
If she only thought she could.
And several times, it’s crossed her mind
The thought of suicide.
It hurts so much. It just won’t end.
The pain she feels inside.
And Julia has a way with words.
She knows just what to say.
Yes, she can make you feel real bad
Or she can make your day.
She walks around her high school halls
Always putting people down.
She laughs at them and scoffs and mocks.
She loves to see them frown.
One day at school the two girls met
And Julia jumped right in.
She made fun of Kate’s hair and clothes
And then she laughed and grinned.
She called her names and would not stop
As Kate began to cry.
The bullying became too much.
Kate ran away to hide.
The next day when the school bell rang,
The principal had said
That Kate won’t be at school today
Because, he said, she’s dead.
He said that she had killed herself
Because the day before,
Yes, she was hurting deep down and
Couldn’t take it anymore.
She left a note that would explain
The reason that she’s dead.
A bully pushed her way too hard
With hurtful words she said.
And then when she realized
What she did with her words,
Yes, Julia then apologized
To ev’ryone she hurt.
She asked them for forgiveness and
Said she never will again
Say mean, cruel words to any one
From now until the end.
The next time that you tease someone,
Just please, stop first and think
The person that you’re teasing, well
Just might be on the brink
Of saying that they’ve had enough.
Their life they want to end
When the one thing that they really want
Is just to have a friend

She Don'T Wanna Fall Again

She thought he was the perfect one.

To her, he was the one.

She finally found the perfect man.

She was a happy girl.

When he asked her to be his bride,

Her eyes filled up with tears.

He placed a ring upon her hand,

Said he’d always be here.

And then before they knew it, yes,

It was their wedding day,

But he left her at the altar

With a baby on the way.

She fell to pieces on that day.

Her world came crashing down.

Oh, it took all she had to pick

Herself up off the ground.

Now each time someone speaks his name,

It makes her think of him.

You see, she fell to pieces once.

She don’t wanna fall again.

He, now after all these years,

Wants back into her life.

He says he’s changes and he wants her

Again to be his wife.

And then he apologized

To her for what he’s done.

He says he wants to be there for

This lady and her son.

He told her he still loves her and.

He wants to be her man.

She said she fell to pieces once

And don’t wanna fall again.

Then she told him to hit the road.

She won’t be his, and then

She said she fell to pieces once

And she won’t fall again.
