The Vacation

THE VACATION 5/5/15

Those heavenly thirty minutes,
Were but so restful to me
Lying there in your arm
Trying not to think of the harm
Taking in your sweet smell
Hoping none of us will tell.

Those beautiful thirty minutes,
Were to me an exciting getaway
Listening to that sweet voice
Knowing that it’s too late for choice
Only for a short time I have you
Then back to my home I have to.

Those lovely thirty minutes,
Were to me a complete holiday
Remembering those days gone
Before my life turned to one long drone
Many cares much a worry
Being with you, I’m not sorry.

Those amazing thirty minutes,
Were to me just pure bliss
Rediscovering senses long dead
Forgetting family waiting to be fed
Sailing through that awesome joy
Soon will be back to shore, Ahoy!

The Divorce

THE DIVORCE
Your stinging absence from us dad
Has for us kids been very bad
Coping with our fatherly loss
Has really been, nothing to floss
Picking all the pieces broken
‘Cause the children you have forsaken
All just trying in our own way
To make it to a better day.

Joy tries to keep it inside
All that sadness she tries to hide
Relying on parties, so much beer
Her false happiness is very clear
Strange boys coming in and out
Enough! I really want to shout
Trying not to face the rap
That you left a very big gap.

Jamie tries to change his looks
Hiding always in his books
Tattoos, piercings, dyed his hair
Darkened room is now his lair
Football player he is no more
All those posters he just tore
Trying hard to bury his hurt
It’s just turning him into a nut.

Little Zoe just withdrew
She really loved you, thought you knew
Pretending that she’s not visible
Her healing sadly is not feasible
Whispering to imaginary friend
Wetting the bed, her new trend
Trying really not to cry
Your departure struggling to justify.

For me it’s been so much worse
Although I really hate to make a fuss
Trying so hard to keep happy face
As first-born boy to take your place
Helping mum to be all strong
But knowing this is all so wrong!
Praying this sadness is just a tide
Soon you’ll be back here by our side.

The New Year's Resolutions

THE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

This year I will Not!
I won’t shed tears no more
Over spilt, spoilt and splattered milk
Trying to win you back
All those years wasted
On a painful, mind numbing love

This year I will Not!
Pray foul prayers for you
Begging, bribing and beseeching
Hoping you will drop dead
In the arms of them ladies
That steal you away from me.

This year I will Not!
Stay awake many hours
Recanting, regretting and regressing
Why, oh! Why me!
Trying to retrace my steps
A hopeless life, a wasted soul

This year I will Not!
Try to hide all these scars
Scratching, slapping even slicing
Recreating my torn skin
Behind the facade of make-up
Make overs and make believe.

This year I will Not!
‘Cause you my dear are no more
Your death, deceasement and departure
Is my sudden re-awakening
Here in the silence of my cell
Fifteen years for manslaughter.

The Dream

THE DREAM
From the corners of my mind
I see hope
Hope as at last my grandchildren
Wade away from poverty
The poverty and hopelessness
That continues to plague
Plague their minds and their souls
I see them chase it away
No longer to be their song.

From the corners of my mind
I see joy
Joy as finally my grandchildren
Step away from illiteracy
The illiteracy and wretchedness
That continues to arrest
Arrest their growth and advancement
I see them drive it away
No longer to be their story

From the corners of my mind
I see victory
Victory as at last my grand children
Win the battle over disease
The disease and destruction
That continue to steal
Steal away their young lives and vitality
I see them drive it away
No longer to be their creed

From the corners of my mind
I see a new day
Newness as finally my grandchildren
Inherit the Africa they deserve
Africa a land of completion
Not all pollution and corruption
A place of plenty and of beauty
The home of God
To be their song, their story and their creed.

The Homecoming

THE HOME COMING(RUMI)

I am coming home
Home where I belong
Home where the heart is
Tired, scared, very weary.
My feelings all so dreary
I’m now slowly trudging home
Home where I belong

I am coming home
Home to bad memories
Home to such sad melodies
Home to fights and tussles
 To the ever pending hustles
I’m now headed home
Home where I belong

I am coming home
Home to such loneliness
Home to such ugliness
Home to a flow of hearses
And the never ending curses
I’m now sadly home
Home where I belong.

The Disappearance

THE DISAPPEARING ACT
Been a while since you left for Dubai
You said to me, ‘it’s not that mbali’
You would soon be right back
And my bags I could start to pack
Swing low, Sweet Cheruiyot!

I gave to you all my savings
Had to ignore all my pals ravings
You were off to make some money
Coming back to be my honey
Swing low, Sweet Cheruiyot!

Very soon will be baby’s birthing
I feel so anxious in this my bedding
Guys now starting to ask hard query
‘When’s he coming, this unseen daddy?’
Swing low, Sweet Cheruiyot!

Why haven’t you called, my dark Raven?
Take me away to that Arabian haven
Please come back to carry me home
Stop me moping like an empty dome.
Swing low, Sweet Cheruiyot.

Still Scared

STILL SCARED
When I was a child
I was afraid
Scared of the dark
Of all things unseen
Scare of heights
of platforms up high
Scared of water
Places that you can drown
Scared of people
Strange and unfamiliar
Scared of ghosts
Hidden under the bed

Now an adult
Am big and grown
Thought of my fears
Would now be gone
But still...
Am afraid.

Scared of the dark
A future so unclear
Scared of heights
Falling from my castles
Scared of water
Life’s overwhelming floods
Scared of people
Hearts so very evil
Scared of ghosts
The skeletons in my closet.

The End

THE END
When the jaws of death
Snatch up your loved one
The only thoughts
Suitable for the moment
Are ’shit! Bloody hell!
She wasn’t even ready yet,
I wasn’t really done with him’
But you can’t cry them out loud
So you just go on and let
Them hot tears flow.

When the claws of death
Grab up your dear one
The only feelings
Suitable for the moment
Are’ why me, oh! Why me
So many words and joys
Left over for us to share!’
But you can’t scream them out loud
So you just go on and let
Them hot tears flow.

When the shadow of death
Swallows up your beloved
The only words
Suitable for the moment
Are’ he gives beauty for ashes’
Strength for fear
Gladness for mourning
Peace for despair’
These you can sing out loud as
You let them hot tears flow,

The Orchestra

I lined them all out
My mind
My soul
My heart
My body
To bring out a song
A volatile melody
A carol of harmony
Just to please you!

I lined them all out
My plans
My career
My dreams
My ambitions
To conduct a song
A mellow arrangement
A rhapsody of notes
Just to please you!

I lined them all out
My looks
My dressing
My cooking
My voice
To put together a song
A synchronized sound
A sonata of rhythm
Just to please you!

The Child's Prayer

THE CHILD’S PRAYER
May I hear
When you call
Hold you tight
In case I fall.

Your great works
May I cheer
Hold your promise
Really near.

May your words
Be my song
On my lips
All day long.

May I listen
When you talk
Follow humbly
When you walk.

May your amour
Be my gear
Your guiding light
Never to veer.

May I wake
When you prod
All just because
You are my God.
