Christina Sookdeo Poem
Common among us may not be everything
With some love, some hate, some passion, some disdain.
But when our hearts ignite inside
To a happy memory, a simple smile,
Or when we gently tap our feet to the beats of a rhythm-
We feel that one united fire.
So I’ll never back down,
There’s always a dollar, a smile, a love that I can share
With the broken hearted,
Whose smiles are frowns for in fear they’ve been matted.
And bitten lips stand, alone
Grappling with the railings of hope,
In the midst of a crowd, in the midst of the storm
They’re the legend, what we define beyond the norm.
We all are, within ourselves, without our strengths
Flaws and all, we fall, stumble to the ground.
Hold your breath for a second, breathe,
We won’t fail this time around
Even if that spark won’t ignite,
Keep on bashing hope and love together,
Passion will erupt at the center.
To be with, to know, not to live our dreams
But to make someone else’s happen,
We are what we chose to be.
Hope, we can hope in what our creator’s started
Still we stand, one, not many, a few
Grasping to a dream we all share, knowing one day it’ll come true.

Christina Sookdeo Poem
Smile! Click!
She poses for a picture
Hands entwined in his,
Faces bumping together, hearts connecting beyond embraces
She knows he’s hers and she’s his
In her dreams- in her deepest wishes
Screams! She screams as she jumps
Didn’t even look but plunged right into love
She said ‘It wasn’t my fault’
But a guilty burn stabs her
Ouch! That’s it!
Just pretend that you haven’t thought a million times about him
Oh yeah! All those poems you wrote, daydreaming, -
Fine! She shuts up the voices
So what? He’s the best of every girl’s choices
He’ll never boast but smiles innocently
Every time she wants to hate him
His beautiful brown eyes catch hers
Poof! Hate disappears
A rush of that feeling called love reappears
She lives a fairytale with him
In imaginary land
Smiling on the outside
Snatching a glimpse as he walks by
Hah! She sighs!
Surely, one day, he’ll be mine!

Christina Sookdeo Poem
Are you okay?
Why does everyone ask that?
Just because I stick by myself
Doesn’t mean I need some psychiatric help
I’m just a quiet girl
I don’t act wild or cool as everyone
I may look bored but I’m kind of fun
Do reading books and liking to be alone seem weird?
Well call me weird
It’s not like I care
I’m not broken up inside or suffering from dumbness
I’m just honest
What’s wrong?
Maybe the fact that everyone sees me as an outcast
Not in the good outcast way;
Yeah, life’s children’s play.
I put too much energy in these word frays
The world will never understand me
And I’ll never understand the world
I’m just an ordinary girl
But they can’t see that
Because they’re blind to cliques and styles and new flicks
I’m tired of this. I can’t stand it.
I’m okay, nothing’s wrong.
Really.
I’m just a little girl lost in her world
Life’s road is a really tiring maze
I think I’ll sit down and enjoy the view
Watch people trip over their feet and blame a stone
Laugh at the way people think of me as alone
Life is ridiculous when you’re not me.
When you don’t understand true beauty
I’m sober, alive
Loving life
So stop having diarrhoea in your mouths
And stop spurting all this crap
Saying ‘she’s like this’ and ‘she’s like that’
I’m not a nerd or freak
Just because to you I hardly speak
So please let me be
I am who I am
And that’s me.

Christina Sookdeo Poem
We’ve seen a thousand burning stars
As we run through these thorns
In the light of the moon
Uphill to the dawn
Here she stares
Lingers with swollen cheeks and icy breath
Through the fog
As we walk
My darling love
Now my one and only sun
Shining through the dull threads of life
All the while
Her small footsteps hasten as the morning birds chirp
Soon we’ll make it to the place of love’s birth
A home, not a house
She skips, knocks on the door
And awaits its owner’s response
Surprised I was
Taken at her vulnerable voice
Clutching my bruised hands
With blurred eyes
I look at her and smile
“Remember where we planted the flowers three days ago?
By the pretty grey stones
Where the birds love to go
And the richest green grasses grow
It’s there my love
We’ve hidden our pearl like no other
Until the day comes
When we wrinkle old
And our worries and tears will never bother
It’s then when we close our eyes to sleep
And I kiss your freckled and swollen cheeks
You’ll dream forever and no more weep
I promise you then
We’ll all be pearls
Lost at sea.

Christina Sookdeo Poem
There’s a love where He walked to that tree
Perfect love, far beyond me; Calvary
There is hope in my soul like an anchor
Like a binder, like a permanent marker
I’ve found where true joy lies
Under His wings, when He holds me,
When He smiles, it shines
Like the fire of a thousand suns
It burns through my aching heart
Healing all the cuts, the bruises, the scars.
Love that entangles me like wild vines
Holding me close to his heart, in his will
With Him there’s no risk of peril
There is no forged truth or forced love
Just the beauty of You, descending like the raindrops from above
Tearing through grey, bleak times
Filling the hopeless skies
With a hope that you’re watching us from up high.
Waiting patiently till the stars make way
For your bride, we wait, for that one day
When we shall see you face to face,
In garments white; Holy,
It’s Jesus - eternally.

Christina Sookdeo Poem
She’s mistaken, the kind of miss-I’m-okay,
Call her pretty; let her pretend disbelief, dismay
Misunderstood, with bruises on her hands,
A pretty smile and a heart full of of scars,
Misjudged, for who she wants to be
All she can think is please
Keep your compliments in the back pocket
Keep your silly treasures in rusted lockets,
Show me something new.
Throw me a punch, start a fire,
Unlike you I have desire
You can’t hold these thoughts,
You can’t bind me in this circle of cliché
I’m done playing all those worthless games
So what if my standards aren’t perfect
Someone out there thinks I’m worth it
Just listen to my heartbeat,
Through the shouts of second guesses,
The wrong turns, the messes,
I’m no less than perfect, just underestimated
Not really complicated,
What I am is just enough; I’ve damned all those fears
You can say I told you so, I really don’t care
This is my silly life,
So humans in the world
I’m not miss-she’s-no-good,
No I won’t be mistreated,
I won’t be misunderstood,
Or misinterpreted and misjudged
I am the colour in the shaded crowds
The spark before the fire,
The calm before the storm,
The passion before desire
I am everything, just nothing of the norm.

Christina Sookdeo Poem
She was bleeding, pierced and bruised
To love she ran, but love refused
With a thousand ugly scars on her heart
Her smiles faded, her life fell apart
He gave her a red rose
As a sign of his love
But the thorns pierced her hands
The rose was filled with blood
She trembled as the drops
Stained her white dress
Her heartbeat dared her to stop
She was drowned with guilt; depressed
With a life full of hurt
From the very ones she loved
She prayed a prayer to the skies above
They answered her with the rain
She stood silently, feeling no pain
Her mistakes, her past were all forgotten
Her distress, her fears became nothing
She dropped the rose
She stopped the bleeding
Her dress was white
She was still breathing
She closed her eyes
For a second or two
Then opened them to see
She was somewhere new
Never again she would be alone
She left the strangers, she finally came home.

Christina Sookdeo Poem
Dear Solitude,
There’s certain warmth when you grasp me,
When your long arms pull me away from gravity,
When my feet can’t feel the ground
That’s when I yearn for these cold fingers to touch
Because my whole world erodes and crashes to the ground.
You’ve been there for me when no one was.
I know your friendship, those ardent bonds,
But my dear Solitude,
You’ve drowned me too far from reality
And thrown me into a circle of pain.
I tremble at the touch of your fingers, the sorrow they carry ,
The way they lose gravity and slam me into suffering.
Why Solitude?
Why’d you break me into millions of pieces?
And toss me into the storm?
Now my heart is here, there and everywhere
My mind and feelings are no longer warm.
Outside this composed body you’ve managed to keep
I’m scattered, confused and dying slowly.
You’ve manages to break me, are you happy?
Don’t be, I won’t be broken for long.
I’ll escape this circle; I’ll walk through this storm.
I’ll find back that fire that drove me to love
And this heart will mend with help from above.
So Solitude,
Don’t look at me in the mirror
And wonder why you can’t touch me again.
I’m seeing clearer and you’re no longer my friend.
Dear Solitude, this time,
I’m breaking these ties
You’ll hold me no more
Forever,
Goodbye.

Christina Sookdeo Poem
Have you ever felt like you wanted to escape life?
That you just wanted to runaway
To a place where it's calm, where you can find solitude
Where you can live your fairytale?
Have you ever felt that way?
Have you ever gotten angry at time for running away and not waiting?
Ever imagined that your life belonged to someone else?
Ever thought what would happen if humans stopped pretending and be themselves
Did you wonder about travelling all around the world?
Or staring into the sunset with the one you love?
Have you ever felt that way?
Do you wish to stop time and do everything you've wanted to?
Meet back old friends, reminiscence
Did you wish for the perfect lover, family and job?
Or how about going back in time and erasing all your mistakes?
Have you ever felt that way?
Well I have
I've felt all those ways
But life is multi-coloured and rainbows only last for minutes
Love is a poison that only speeds up time
Friendship like a story that unwinds
Well, What if today was your last day
And time didn't care?
Would you run and tell the one you love how you felt?
Would you hug you friends and shout out how much they meant?
Would you forget your mistakes and live for today
Because you knew there'd be no tomorrow?
Would you live each day as if it were your last?
And consider each day a gift and not a prize?
If only you would
You'd see the true meaning of life
You won't ever be alone, everything would be alright
Because at that moment
You would finally start to live.

Christina Sookdeo Poem
Don’t have me in arms reach
And keep your distance,
I can’t hold my breath for much longer,
No I’m not stronger
Than the air in my lungs
Or the muscles in my cheeks
Don’t make promises you can’t keep.
I want to trust you to hold me
Without the fear of letting go
I should let you know
That I love you
But my lips decisively forget
My tongue lingers,
You take my breath away,
Sentences become murmurs.
You steal my every intention of moving on,
And making a new start.
But I don’t mind,
You can take all my organs-
Just don’t leave out my heart.
