Brenda

‘Brenda’

I nether miss you nor do I wish were here. I don’t even think of you...often. You simply were...someone...ma...mom...mother...none of the above, Brenda.

There were too many bitches and whores in our tiny apartment. There was too much profane anger and sadness hard nailed to my innocence.

I can’t care that you’re gone. Yet I care where you ended up. If in Heaven, you’ve finally found peace from your tormenting witches. If in hell, the life you had here lingers on.

I sometimes think of your orange juice cakes and your chitterlings. I remember your smile, your deep, drunk dimples and your soft curly hair and...I still remember things I don’t care to speak of.

The way you said my name, when you actually called me by my name...Trina. The way you were when you hadn’t stopped at the liquor store. The way you folded my panties so neat. The way a mother must love her child, so sweet.

If you were still here, we would still be strangers and I would have to remember to say Happy Mothers Day. The card would lie and express feelings I know nothing of and I would have done my duty as your child.

Perhaps if you had stayed longer I might have tried to get to know you better...monster...pain...tears...grief...all of the above, Brenda.

Opposites

IF FLOWERS BLOOMED IN WINTER
AND
SNOW FELL IN SPRING
WE
WOULD BE LIKE
STARS
SHINING IN DAYLIGHT
FOREVER.

Eyes Wide Shut

I wanna go to Martha’s Vineyard, eat muscadines and drink wine.

I want my belly to swell with the fruit of our love.

I wanna drive on full and eat fillet mignon for breakfast.

I wanna live like God is my Father and Jesus, my Brother who saved me.

I wanna trust and never hate ‘n never be careful ‘bout nothin’.

I wanna be Scarlet in Scarsdale and Sr. Edward Crump at the Macy’s Day Parade.

I want green eyes and red hair. I want hips that don’t exist.

I want Oprah on the phone right now!

I wanna drive my baby to school.

I want tuna on toast with capers and sweet nectar pomegranate juice.

I wanna open my eyes....

Sweet Home

SWEET HOME

PEOPLE WALKIN’ AND TALKIN’, MAKIN’ A WHOLE
LOTA’ NOISE!
NOBODY ‘SOUL STIRS’ NO MORE!

IT’S THE CITY LIGHTS WITH THEIR ATTITUDE
LIKE IT AIN’T NICE WHERE IT’S DARK AND
QUIET OUTSIDE.

IT’S PEOPLE PASSIN’ BY YA BARLEY WANTIN’ TO SPEAK.
IT’S TALL BUILDINGS BLOCKIN’ THE SUN MAKIN’ THE SKY LOOK CHEAP.

IT’S MY SOUL LONGIN’ FOR FIREFLIES, LEMONAID AND PUPPIES LICKIN’ MY FEET.

WITH PEOPLE SINGING AND LAUGHING, SLAPPING THEIR THIGH.
RAISING CAIN, DRINKING BOOTLEG LIKE IT’S THE
FORTH OF JULY.

I WANT CAROLINA EVENINGS
SUN GONE DOWN
BLOWIN’ SMOKE RINGS ‘ROUND STARS
NOTHIN’ LOUD AROUND.

GREYHOUND RIDE ON…
EMPTY THIS LONG ROAD HOME.

DON’T STOP TILL WE GET THERE
CAUSE I BEEN GONE TOO LONG.

The Other Womans Child

Your eyes are dark brown. Your nose is kinda small and I don’t think you’ll ever be tall. I never thought you looked much like your mother. Could it be that Darryl’s not your real brother? Marilyn and Andre’ look so much alike. Maybe it’s a coincidence that you turned out light. You seem so different, so aloof from the rest. I think you feel awkward in your stepmother’s nest.

You may not know but I’ve known for a long time. You see, your situations just like mine. I have two sisters who don’t look like me and three brothers over 6 foot 3. I am the skeleton that came out of the closet so now everyone has to acknowledge. I say this to say there’s no need to feel sad. We’re just the victims of something that turned out bad. Hold your head up high girl and be real proud. There’s no need in being ashamed that you’re the other woman’s child.
