I Was Here Last Week

I was here last week

using the blood-stained tears of adversity to document the quarrels of my mind on
your walls

The passion that went into each stroke
held tightly in each breath
could not be matched

I was here last

after everyone else had gone home in spirits high on a wind I couldn’t catch
their tears long-since dried
their thirst for an end to hurt already quenched

I was here

The crooked trail of my footprints and the half-empty glass with my lipstick still in
place

You can still see my shadow
swaying slightly to a song only I heard
rocking to the beat of an earthquake no one else noticed

I was

in complete submission to this place

Each story on these walls I thought was mine
a lesson to learn
to be melted down in a pot that would culminate to embody my change
my freedom

I

felt the certainty of a new day played out in your smile
your quiet reassurances

Knew that hope wasn’t as farfetched as the queens of my history once vouched

If need be, I’ll be here again tomorrow
