the song you stole

music notes used to dance for me
when I played the ivory keys
little birds flying high
bringing back pieces of the great blue sky
now they muddle at my feet
I’m drowning in puddles of ebony ink
I played for you
don’t you remember?
my music was your medicine
I just wish it hadn’t become your addiction
melodies to drown out the misery
no one understands that better then me
let’s drink to the memories
it would have been better to ignore
I still go back to before
treble clefs made me tremor
and your heart turned to cold december
your lullabies that sung me to sleep
haunt my nightmares without relief
when people ask my favorite song I freeze
isn’t funny the irony
that the way I escaped
became the very thing that keeps me chained
sing me your siren song
see how long it takes
for me to break
under the waves
shells hold the echo
of the love I used to know
I’ve forgotten the words
And I hum the harmony
I know I’m only making it worse
voice of an angel but now its a curse
smooth jazz smile
whirlwind romance
but now I see
I fed into your fantasy
for you I played
until my fingers ached
I couldn’t stop
even though it was killing me
I tried to tell you but you weren’t listening
my heart keeps beating to your rhythm
I was too innocent to recognize your deception
music notes now weep for me
because for you I played my last heartstring
