Unrequited

Unrequited

Sam VanHook

How could you possibly think to love that which you do not understand?
Among the multitude of stars that shine in your midst
You, of all people, stare unrelenting at that star that's farthest away, yet to you it shines the brightest; a false deity.

Shameless…

Fires of an unknown age flicker in your eyes
Tempted, tempted to be
dragged down into this abysmal feeling you would rather
dwell in than succumb to your dying strength.
Jealous, fierce passion you feel, it will come to pass
Fleeting for but a moment,
 In your mirrored eyes,
You know it cannot come to be.
And still, you think yourself a king

For that is what he once saw you as, not because he loved you,
but because you made yourself believe so.
Sullied, memories will serve no purpose
The road is long; it winds for many more leagues
You carry with you a burden, clamping to you like a vice
It tourniquets your chest, demanding you sacrifice your free will
Your words mean nothing, a shadow of their former selves.

You must carry on, dragging the thoughts that you cling to tenaciously, a duty never to be broken.
You would wait until
Earth's…
        last…
               seconds…

Bearing the strength and honour of champions, but a fool's resolve
The days grow shorter.

When he returns, the dust of your flight will take your place
Uninvited…
     Undecided….
               Unrequited….
