On Being a Tree

“On Being a Tree.” If you want to be a tree In a listening wood, There is something you should know If you only could. You must always stand your ground, And state what you believe. For staying put with what you think Is perfect for a tree. And bending to the wind is fine, But you can never break. Breaking due to hardship Is a choice a tree won’t make. Every spring, you’ll look gorgeous, But every winter, you die. And all you are is a twig Set against the sky. But that twig has life, you have life. Somewhere deep inside And so, your beauty is something That always goes to hide. However, when you’re old and wise The Humans come along, And cut you from the listening wood With a happy song. In a listening wood, you must listen To every sound it makes. And, while the Humans may destroy, The listening wood creates.
