Harlem Renaissance Haiku

Near nice allies need
to confront this beast in the
moment to be brave.

Not in a memoir
when you’re 75 and
few feet from the grave.

For colored people
and all people of color
start a whining wave.

Why do we still fight
for the same civil rights of
nineteen sixty-three?

Did you know Comcast
is fighting against the rights
of Black and poor folks?

Look it up yourself
know what is going on around you
find a cause to fight.

Use your pen and voice
raise your voice and write it down
vote a righteous cause.

Organize your block
note differences and respect
put judgement on pause.

Let’s make it better
you and I together to
help correct the flaws.

Privilege Exposes Self

T’was “a day that will live in infamy”
January sixth twenty twenty-one
“The Other America” waved its flag
Her darker brothers witness the privilege
On a daily basis throughout their lives
When they see Black skin, they see chattel
People around the world witnessed the day
See Two Americas show their dismay
Privilege unleashed his punch against privilege
Does America specialize in hate?
He ripped off the sheets exposing the weight
Can’t put that genie back in the bottle
He hides well inside White plight whining crime
You really think there’d be no consequence?

Prayer For Self-Image

Help me to
find identity in you
understand my worth
value your standards
recognize my unique qualities
designed by you
Lord, to you I pray

Help me to
appreciate me
see myself the way you see me
understand that you Lord
fashioned me too a little lower than the angels
view you as my author and designer
Lord, before you these things I lay

Help me to
see you crowned me with glory and honor too
know you made me to have dominion over the creation as well
understand you put all things under my feet to boot
ask you to quiet the voice that whispers otherwise
seek your satisfaction and yours alone
Lord, I utter your praise today

Help me to
hear your voice
taste your perfection
realize you will make my life successful
comprehend I have no power
perceive all power is yours, Father Yah
Lord, give me ears to say

Who's Minding the Children

Innocence lost
and being ignored
sin destroyed
sickness and little hope
confusion of mind
How can fathers detach so easily?
And who’s minding the children?
Broken homes
absentee fathers long gone
mothers now abandoning them too
or too busy to love and care
child abuse and perversion
What happened to the fathers who say they are men?
And who’s minding the children?
Taught to think of only self
gangs and bloodshed on the rise
early pregnancy and more unwanted babies
disrespect of authority now rampant
they don’t live long anymore
Where are the fathers who plagiarize God’s name?
And who’s minding the children?
Abuse their elderly regularly
violence in dating is now so common
all manner of carnage and misuse
homosexuality embellished and tolerated
emotionally damaged while so very young
Why is daddy nowhere to be found?
And who’s minding the children?
Physically impaired and unhealthy
insolent conduct
drugs annihilating
hidden in prison houses
sleeping in the streets
Wasn’t daddy placed as head?
And who’s minding the children?
Raising themselves
Uneducated
Misdirected
hungry
and full of rage
Where are these fathers who beat their chests?
And who’s minding the children?
