Journey's End

Faint starlight peers through clearing skies,
An easy wind finds sleepy eyes.
That far off sound I first mistook
For jingling bells - a lingering brook.

My horse is bedded down with hay
And will not stir 'til brink of day.
No sign of sleigh, no bustling feet;
No watchman on his nightly beat.

I think of long-forgotten days
And roads that led to other ways;
Past stony walls and woodland shade,
Past promises and choices made.

I think of colors, new and old,
Blue butterflies and fading gold.
I find myself at journey's end;
My final chapter freshly penned.

I sigh...then settle back with ease
And clear my thoughts of yesterday.
I catch the passing midnight breeze,
Then silently, I slip away...
I slip away...I slip away.

Sounds of Civil War

I crossed the Fields of Misery
And wept in blood-let streams.
I saw the face of Terror
Frozen in a soldier's scream.

I heard the sound of laughter;
Children playing in the sun.
I heard the sound of thunder;
Clapping from a torrent gun.

I knelt with bitter silence;
Mute heroes washed ashore.
I heard the distant cannons
Chanting hymns of civil war.

The Hand of God

Navigating the broken wind
A monarch dips southward,
Crossing the wasted field,
Drifting past the rustic ruins
Of a deserted farmhouse.
The early afternoon breeze
Plays the antique structure
Like a Stradivarius,
Riddled and seasoned
By the Master himself.

A pale yellow leaf,
Curled and burnt,
Stumbles downstream like a tiny junk
Freshly thrown to the cold black brook
That runs the thorny gauntlet between
The barley fields and the Orient.

A doe emerges
From the fleeting shadows
Marking the edge of day.
A stag follows
Then freezes,
Drawn to the forest floor
By the sound
Of a crashing chestnut.

It is a time
Of celebration and feast,
But there is a tension in the air
As the frost stings
And drives the worm
Deeper into the earth.
There is an unspoken restlessness,
The calm before the battle cry,
Before the winter mongrel returns
With its icy blade and maniacal fury.

But the evening is still,
As the last breath of autumn
Tints the western sky
With pink and amber,
Warming my spirit
And strengthening my sanity.

Aurora flirts with my imagination
As the last light fades
And the constellations re-awaken.
I scan the infinite space,
And in the spark of a distant star
I glimpse the face of God.

Natural Nobility

I watched the glacier slowly drip...
Then crack... and slip beneath the sea.
For forty years she disappeared,
A nameless, melted dynasty.

But on a breezy, cloud-lit day,
Ten thousand measured miles away,
The sun pierced through the fractured blue;
Then something drifted into view.

A floating singularity,
Most certainly nobility,
Now lost upon the skyward sea,
Her Majesty... still marching on...

Still searching for Eternity...

Choice

Will you cry for years with nothing more to say,
Or dry your tears and find a better way?
Will you fold and let your story go untold,
Or brave a life that's interesting and bold?
Will you seek out phantom battles just for spite,
Or blight the wrong and always side with right?
Will you lag behind, reclusive, in disgrace,
Or set the pace and lead the human race?
Will you wrestle with your enemies and guilt,
Or measure wealth by friendships that you've built?
Will you stain your life with unforgiven pain,
Or sacrifice when nothing's left to gain?

Will you see the glowing sun shine through the rain,
Or shut your eyes and live your life in vain?
